Nanooks Fall to Alaska Anchorage in Nordic Cup

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks skiing team took on the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Sunday morning in day two of the Alaska Nordic Cup in Anchorage. The two teams competed in the 7.5k classic, with Rosie Fordham adding another victory and Ben Dohlby picking up a third-place finish. However, the Nanooks fell by 5:28 over the two days of competition.

"The team showed a lot of grit this weekend," said interim head coach Ben Buck. "It was a hard-fought battle for the Nordic Cup, and even though we fell short, there were some very promising signs for the coming season and everyone in the squad."

Dohlby followed his win in the 10k freestyle on Saturday by finishing third in the classic, posting an 18:56, and was the Nanooks top finisher. Philipp Moosmayer grabbed fifth place with a 19:06, finishing three seconds behind UAA's Hermond Bangstad, and Cole Flowers' seventh-place finish made him the last Nanook to have their time count towards the final score. He crossed the line in 19:14.

Gabriele Rigaudo placed eighth with a 19:16, and Josh Baurick notched a top-10 finish with a 20:05, finishing in the ten spot. Blake Hanley's 20:22 put him 13th, and P.J. Bragonier crossed the line in 20:35 to take 16th place in his first collegiate race.

Fordham picked up her second victory of the weekend, completing her race 34 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher after posting a 21:39. Piper Sears took fifth with a 23:52, and Victoria Myers followed in seventh with a 25:57. Lucca Duke and Anya Simard finished eighth and ninth, respectively, posting times of 27:35 and 28:10.

The Nanooks begin their RMISA schedule after the new year with the RMISA Invitational, skiing at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, N.Y. They will race in a 10k classic on Jan. 4 and classic sprints on Jan. 9. They will also compete in a 20k freestyle at the RMISA Nordic Qualifier on Jan. 7.
