Nanooks Travel South for Game Three of Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup

ANCHORAGE - The Nanooks hockey team prepares for a single game at Alaska Anchorage tomorrow. Saturday's game is game three of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup with the series tied at 1-1.

Last Time Out (Exhibition Win vs. Simon Fraser)
  • Alaska opened the scoring on Saturday night with a pair of first-period goals. Luke Johnson tallied both to make it 2-0 Nanooks 11:48 into the game. The first was redirected off of his skate on a Dean Spak shot. Johnson cemented himself out front of the net before angling the puck into the back of the net. Nearly seven minutes later he found the back of the net again. Spak found him once again and Johnson quickly made it 2-0 Nanooks. 
  • Simon Fraser struck back with a goal less than two minutes later, making it 2-1 going into the first intermission. 
  • Haden Kruse extended the lead to 3-1 4:22 into the second before Fyodor Nikolayenya and Brendan Ross made it 4-1 and 5-1 before the second intermission. In the third, SFU pulled to within two at 5-3 but with 54 seconds remaining, Bryce Monrean scored one final time, giving the Nanooks a 6-3 exhibition win.
Meet the Opponents - UAA Seawolves
  • UAA is led by Dimitry Kebreau. He has 17 points through 24 games this season, scoring five goals and adding 12 assists. Their leading goal scorer is Ryan Johnson with nine goals and five assists for 14 points. 
  • Greg Orosz has seen the most time in net for Anchorage. He's appeared in 18 games, posting a 4-10-2-0 record with a 3.27 GAA and .881 save percentage. 
  • Tyler Krivtsov has played in 11 games this season for UAA. He is 1-7-1-0 in net with a 3.05 GAA and .893 save percentage. As a team, the Seawolves are 12-75 on the power play (16%) and 67-90 on the penalty kill (74.4%).
  • UAA is averaging 12.68 blocked shots per game with 317 blocked shots. 
  • They have scored first 10 times and have two game-tying goals and three goals scored with an extra attacker. 
  • Matt Shasby is the bench boss for UAA. He is in his third season leading the Seawolves and holds a 32-53-6 (.385) career record, all coming as the UAA head coach.

  • Alaska is back into NCAA play after a pair of mid-season exhibition games against Simon Fraser at home on Jan. 10-11.
  • The Nanooks swept the Red Leafs with a 2-1 OT win and a 6-3 win on night two. 
  • Broten Sabo is currently eighth in the nation with three game-winning goals this year. He is first among independent skaters and tied with Carter Rapalje of LIU.
  • Chase Dafoe is tied for 17th in the nation with one short-handed goal on the season. His one also puts him third among independent skaters. David Gagnon (Lindenwood) and Carter Rapalje (LIU) lead independent ranks with two SHG each.
  • Nicholas Grabko is in the top-50 for three major goalie categories. He is 43rd in GAA with 2.48 and 43rd in save percentage with a .912. He is 29th in the nation with one shutout this season. 
  • Alaska is 13th in the nation with 10.90 penalty minutes per game. They are 16th with 218 total penalty minutes.
  • On Jan. 3 at UMD, the Nanooks posted 0 PIM. The last time the Nanooks had 0 PIM in a game was Oct. 16, 2015. That game ended as a 7-2 home win over AIC.
  • Dec. 29, 2024 against Ferris State was the second-most points scored by Nanooks skaters. There were 11 points recorded in the 4-1 victory, the highest of the season was 15 in the Nanooks 6-4 win at Union on 11/9/24.
  • The victory over UMD on Jan. 4 was the first-ever in hockey program history. Entering the weekend series at AMSOIL the Bulldogs led the all-time series 6-0-0. It now stands at 6-1-1. 
  • Saturday is a pivotal game three of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup with the series tied at 1-1. The last time the Nanooks lost to UAA more than once in a season was 2017-18. The Nanooks won the Cup that year, 4-2.
  • The Alaska Nanooks lead the Cup series 21-8. Alaska also leads the total Governor's Cup total 54-39-8 (44-39-8 after vacated wins).
  • UAA leads the series in Anchorage 23-22-3 while the Nanooks lead the way in Fairbanks 21-16-5. The Nanooks also lead OT games 5-4-8. Alaska has picked up an OT win over the Seawolves over the last three seasons.
  • The Seawolves last win in Fairbanks came on Feb. 8, 2018, a 4-1 win in the Carlson Center. Alaska went on to win the Cup that year 3-1.
  • Since 2009-10 when the 13-year streak began for the Cup, the Nanooks are 37-13-2 against their in-state rivals.
  • Kyle Gaffney has four points in his last three games and eight points in his last seven points. The center leads the Nanooks with 13 points on five goals and eight assists. He leads the Nanooks with four multipoint performances this year.
  • In his last eight games, Matt Hubbarde has posted five points on two goals and three assists. The forward is third on the team in scoring with 11 points on four goals and seven assists.
  • Broten Sabo has two power-play goals and three game-winners to lead the 'Nooks. His 12 points leads the defensive core and is second on the team. 
  • The Nanooks are outblocking their opponents 249-194 this season for an average of 12.45 blocks per game. 
  • William Lawson-Body has blocked a team-high 26 shots this season. Carson Reed trails with 23 blocked shots. 
  • Alaska is 6-1-1 when scoring first this year. They are 1-8-3 when their opponents score first. 
  • In one-goal games, the Nanooks are 4-3.  
  • The Nanooks have added four signings for next season already this year. Jhett Larson of the WHL's Red Deer Rebels, Beau Courtney of the WHL's Everett Silvertips, Calvin Vachon of the USHL's Waterloo Black Hawks, and Jackson Anderson of the BCHL's Surrey Eagles.
  • Colton Parayko (2012-15) was named to Team Canada for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off in Boston and Montreal. This will be the first 4 Nation's Face-Off roster appearance for the blueliner.

  • The Nanooks finished a weekend series with Minnesota in Minneapolis Thanksgiving weekend. It wrapped up 12 straight road games, the longest recorded streak in the program's 41 years in Division I. Fourteen flights, six bus rides, approximately 21,033 miles by air and 1,835 miles by bus.   • Alaska will hit the road for three-straight games before their final home games. Jan. 18 at Alaska Anchorage, Jan. 24-25 at UMass.
  • Final home series will come Jan. 31-Feb. 1 and Feb. 8 vs. Alaska Anchorage to conclude the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.
