Nanooks Swim Welcomes Azusa Pacific to Open 2023-24 Regular-Season

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks swim team welcomes the Cougars of Azusa Pacific to the Patty Center Pool this weekend for their regular-season opening dual meets.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks debuted with their Blue/Gold Meet on Saturday, Oct. 7. Gold grabbed the win 62-58. The dozen-event morning saw a 400-yard medley relay get the first points on the board. The Blue Team made up of Charlotte Fletcher-StablesShannon McCallum, Addeline Berry and Payton Wojciechowicz grab first-place by three seconds. They posted a finishing time of 4:22.60, defeating the Gold relay team made up of Lainey LioiDorka DancsokMesa Moran and Kaidence Sampsel. They finished in 4:25.72. The second event was the 200-yard freestyle. Gold grabbed their first win of the day with Naomi Burgan finishing in first by nearly six full seconds. She paced a 2:05.70 winning time while second-place, Tori Shoemaker of the Blue Team, finished in 2:11.18. Wojciechowicz followed close behind in third, finishing in 2:11.60. Lori Houghton (4th - 2:12.67) and Kylee Carter(5th - 2:26.35) rounded out the scoring in event two. 

Dancsok grabbed a win in the 100-yard breaststroke, beating Shannon McCallum by 11 seconds. Dancsok finished in 1:09.35 while McCallum wrapped up in 1:20.39. Gold made it three-straight wins in the pool when Lainey Lioiwon the 50-yard freestyle in 26.43, besting Shoemaker by over a second and a half (28.10). Berry took third with a 28.32, Sampsel took fourth with a 28.53 and Wojciechowicz took fifth with a 28.88. Fletcher-Stables got Blue back in the winners circle with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke. She posted a winning time of 2:15.76, winning by nearly 20 seconds. Mesa Moran took second (2:35.02) and Burgan took third (2:38.36). Adeline Berry won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.68. Her Blue teammate, Lori Houghton, followed in second and a time of 1:10.31. Sampsel was the lone Gold racer and took third with a time of 1:14.96. Dancsok returned to the top of the podium in the 200-yard IM. She won it in 2:11.55, winning by over 22 seconds. Mesa Moran took second, Fletcher-Stables took third, Wojciechowicz took fourth and Carter took fifth. Lainey Lioi grabbed another freestyle victory, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.80. She was the only sub-minute time on the day as Shannon McCallumfollowed in second with a 1:00.18 and Tori Shoemaker followed in third with a 1:02.70. 

Gold took three of the final events. Dancsok won another in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a winning time of 2:29.81. Shannon McCallum took second with a time of 2:50.71, Houghton took third (2:51.83) and Carter took fourth (3:03.82). Fletcher-Stables won the final event for Blue, taking the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.25. Lainey Lioi followed in second and Kaidence Sampsel took third. 

Mesa Moran won the final individual event on the day, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:28.71. She beat Naomi Burgan (2nd - 2:33.27) and Adeline Berry (3rd - 2:41.42). Finally, Gold won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:58.93. They bested the Blue team by less than two seconds. Blue posted a time of 4:00.71.

  • The Nanooks are looking for their first dual-meet victory against Azusa Pacific since Oct. 19, 2018 when they defeated the Cougars 108-95. 
  • In recent history, the Nanooks have found some success against APU; they are 6-8 in the past nine years against Azusa Pacific.
  • Alaska won three-straight in 2014-2016 seasons, claiming a pair of 117-88 wins on Oct. 17-18, 2014 before winning again 104-101 on Oct. 16, 2015.
  • The Cougars won last year's matchups in Fairbanks 133-66 and 125-76. 
2022-23 Finish
The Nanooks finished the 2022-23 season with a 2-4, 2-4 PRC season record. They began the season with four-straight losses, dropping a pair to APU on Oct. 21-22, 2022 and going to Westmont before falling in both 97-94 and 104-99 on Oct. 28-29, 2022. After finishing 10th at the La Verne Invite in Los Angeles, Calif., they turned around and opened up 2023 with a pair of dual-meet victories against Westmont in the Patty Center Pool. On Jan. 20-21 they beat the Warriors 118-87 and 113-92. They then finished ninth-place at the PCSC Championships with 439 points. 

Newcomers
The Nanooks are welcoming four newcomers to the team this year as Dorka Dancsok, Charlotte Fletcher-Stables, Lori Houghton and Meah McCallum join the squad for the 2023-24 season.
