Nanooks Defeat Loggers in Friday Afternoon Dual Meet

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks swimming team picked up a dual win over the Puget Sound Loggers on Friday afternoon at the Patty Center Pool, winning 10 out of 11 events and earning a 141-63 victory. Dorka Dancsok and McKenzie Fazio both notched two individual wins on the day to help the 'Nooks to victory.

The meet began with the 400-yard medley relay, where Talia Wentz, Giorgia Merlo, Mariia Sirotinskaia and Fazio led the way, finishing over eight seconds ahead of second place with a 4:05.67. Kitti Marton put on another strong showing in the 1650-yard freestyle, completing her race in 18:29.52 to put her 45 seconds in front of the rest of the pack. Merlo (2:01.32) and Sirotinskaia (2:01.77) finished 1-2 in the 200-yard freestyle, while Fazio led the way in the 50-yard freestyle with a 26.21. Puget Sound's Daphne Khong took first in the 200-yard IM after posting a 2:16.97, with Cosima Schmiedel coming within .03 seconds of Khong in first place. Dancsok picked up her first of two wins on the afternoon, claiming first place in the 100-yard butterfly. Her time of 59.52 put her just outside the top-10 in program history for the event. However, later in the meet, Dancsok would crack the top 10 in the 100-yard breaststroke, as her 1:06.96 is eighth-best in program history.

Fazio also earned her second win of the day, swimming to a 56.38 in the 100-yard freestyle. Charisma Watkins (1:02.84) led the way in the 100-yard backstroke, while Sirotinskaia (5:28.69), Ali Pecore (5:30.68) and Schmiedel (5:37.63) locked out the top three in the 500-yard freestyle.

The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay, in which both Alaska teams finished 1-2. Wentz, Merlo, Schmiedel and Fazio posted a 3:16.80 to take first place. Pecore, Sirotinskaia, Marton and Dancsok followed in second place to give the 'Nooks the top two results in the event.

The Nanooks are back in the pool tomorrow for another dual meet against Puget Sound. The meet begins at 10 a.m. and will be livestreamed on the GNAC Network.
