Last Time Out
The Nanooks are fresh off of a bye week following their Bowling Green series on Feb. 14-15. In that series with the Falcons, the 'Nooks made two big comebacks, grabbing a tie in both games. In game one, Alaska came back from down 0-2, forcing overtime where Kylar Hope ended the night only 45 seconds into the 3v3 OT period. The goal gave the 'Nooks the extra point in the WCHA standings.

The next night, the Falcons again jumped out to an early lead, taking a 0-3 advantage into the midway point of the second period. After cutting into the lead with their first goal in the second period, the Nanooks Steven Jandric eventually tied things up at 3-3 with just over seven minutes remaining in regulation, forcing a second consecutive overtime game. Despite three goals in the final two periods, the 'Nooks could not manage to grab the winner, however, neither could the Falcons. The teams went on to a shootout to decide who claimed the extra WCHA point. BGSU ended the night in the third round, netting the lone SO goal, splitting the weekend in Fairbanks, three points apiece.

Eleven…?
The Nanooks will look for their 11th straight Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup win over the Seawolves, spanning back to the 2009-10 season. Earlier in the year, on Oct. 25-26, the Nanooks travelled to Anchorage for the first leg of the Cup. In the first game of the year, Alaska grabbed a 2-1 win over the Seawolves behind goals from Max Newton and Tristan Thompson. In game two however, the Seawolves came out firing, picking up a 0-4 victory over the 'Nooks, setting up this weekend for the finish. No matter what, the series will be concluded on Saturday due to the split in the first meeting.

Playoff Picture
The Nanooks can play spoiler for the Seawolves this weekend if they take all six points. The Nanooks at the moment are tied for fourth in the WCHA with Bowling Green with 43 points. With the top four teams in the standings hosting the first round of the WCHA playoffs, here are all the scenarios for the 'Nooks to host:

  • UAF clinches home ice with six points
  • UAF clinches home ice with five points, and five points or less for Bowling Green.
  • UAF clinches home ice with five points, six points for Bowling Green, and zero points for Northern Michigan.
  • UAF clinches home ice with four points via a win and a 3x3/shootout loss, zero points for Northern Michigan, and exactly four points for Bowling Green
  • UAF clinches home ice with four points via a win and a 3x3/shootout loss, and one or more points for Northern Michigan.
  • UAF clinches home ice with four points via two 3x3/shootout wins, one or more points for Northern Michigan, and three points or less for Bowling Green.
  • UAF clinches home ice with four points via two 3x3/shootout wins, one or more points for Northern Michigan, and four points or Bowling Green via two 3x3/shootout wins.
  • UAF clinches home ice with three points, three points or less for Bowling Green, and five points or less for Michigan Tech.
  • UAF clinches home ice with two points via two 3x3/shootout losses, two points or less for Bowling Green, and four points or less for Michigan Tech.
  • UAF clinches home ice with two points via a loss and a 3x3/shootout win, one point or less for Bowling Green, and three points or less for Michigan Tech.
  • UAF clinches home ice with one point, one point or less for Bowling Green, and  three points or less for Michigan Tech.
  • UAF clinches home ice with zero points, zero points for Bowling Green, and one points or less for Michigan Tech.
  • UAF clinches home ice with zero points, zero points for Bowling Green, and two points for Michigan Tech via a loss and a 3x3/shootout win.

While the 'Nooks would need some help if they were to lose this weekend, there are still many opportunities for the Nanooks to host home-ice for the first time since their inaugural season with the WCHA in 2013-14. As for UAA, they find themselves in the eighth and final playoff spot, however, if they were to fall in both games, the Nanooks could potentially knock Anchorage out of the playoff picture completely, grabbing not only the Cup, but adding to the rivalry by spoiling their season in Fairbanks.

Fireworks
