@NanooksHockey Snaps 16-Game Losing Streak to Michigan Tech

Box Score HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team grabbed their first win of the 2019-20 season, improving to 1-2-0, 1-0-0-0 WCHA with a 3-2 win over the Michigan Tech Huskies on Oct. 11.

After a scoreless first period, the 'Nooks were the first to get on the board when Sr., F, Kylar Hope grabbed his first goal of the season 12 seconds into the second period. Tyler Cline and Eriks Zohovs assisted on the goal. It was not be long until the Nanooks grabbed another goal when Jr., F, Justin Young scored in a crowd in front of the net. A couple rebounds by Young eventually found the back of the net at the 15:36 mark, with assists from Garrett Pyke and James LaDouce. Pyke received his first collegiate point with this assist.

Alaska added their third and final goal in the second period as So., D, Chris Jandric, on a power play, found his first goal of the season off an assist from Max Newton with 8:19 remaining. Michigan Tech answered back quickly, however. At the 6:03 mark, Brian Halonen of the Huskies grabbed his second goal of the season to get the Huskies on the board. Trenton Bliss and Logan Pietila assisted on the goal, the second assist on the season for both.

The third period saw the Huskies turn up their attack. Winning the shots on goal in the third, 11-4, Tech put anything and everything towards the net. With 1:14 remaining and an empty net, Michigan Tech grabbed their second goal, cutting the deficit to one with their extra attacker. Tommy Parrottino scored his first goal of the season as Colin Swoyer and Alex Smith added both of their third assists. The onslaught in front of the net would continue, but So., G, Gustavs Grigals held strong, not allowing the tying goal. Grigals ended the night with 16 totals saves, 10 of which came in the third period alone.

Head coach Erik Largen thought Alaska was strong in the right areas, but they still have a lot of work to do, "I thought we had a great group effort tonight. We were competitive and won the hard areas. We know we have to be even better tomorrow as Michigan Tech is a very good hockey team."
