FAIRBANKS – Six teams are in action over a busy weekend period for Nanook athletics, starting with volleyball's 5:00 p.m. match at Montana State Billings. All-in-all men's and women's cross country, hockey, rifle, swimming and volleyball all compete this weekend.
Cross CountryThe men's and women's cross country teams travel to Estacada, Oregon to take place in the 18th Lewis & Clark Invitational on Saturday. The race is set to begin at 10:00 a.m.
LEWIS & CLARK UNIVERSITY WEBSITELast week both the men's and women's Alaska cross-country teams produced fine showings at the 40th Annual Charles Bowles Willamette Invitational hosted by Willamette University. The men's team finished ninth out of 14 with a score of 237 points and the women placed 11th out of 16 teams with a total score of 315 points.
Mitch Burgess was the men's top finisher as he placed 44th with an 8k time of 26:09.85.
Ross MacDougall finished just four spots behind in 48th-place in 26:14.88.
Keegan Rankin (26:31.99) and
Michael Fehrenbach (26:35.98) placed in 66th and 69th, respectively, while
Kenneth Brewer (84th/26:55.71), Jonas Loeffler (89th/27:03.14) and Issac Lammers (100th/27:17.38) rounded out the Nanook scoring.
The top finisher for the women was
Dorothy O'Donnell who finished 53rd with a 5k time of 19:19.84.
Kali Striker finished in 59th in 19:24.54 while Nicole Bathe placed 75th with a time of 19:43.81. The Nanooks then had finishers four through six score within five places of each other as
Anne-Tine Markset (97th/20:04.73),
Cheyenne Greenside (98th/20:06.61) and
Grace Weller (102nd/20:08.84) formed a tight pack.
Hannah Stevens rounded out the Nanook scoring with a 128th-place showing in 20:33.89.
HockeyThe No. 19/RV ranked Alaska hockey team is in action Friday and Saturday with games against the United States Air Force Academy and Penn State University as part of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush. Alaska Anchorage is the fourth team involved, and will play in the tournament's first game, on Friday beginning at 5:07 p.m.

Davis Jones was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player as started and won both games for the Nanooks over the weekend. He posted a .942 save percentage as he stopped 33 of the 35 shots he faced, including all 14 against Wisconsin on Friday, in his first collegiate shutout.
Colton Parayko and
Josh Atkinson were named to the All-Tournament Team, as well. Parayko scored the lone goal in Alaska's 1-0 win over Wisconsin and provided a helper in the 5-2 victory against Maine while also showing leadership from his defensive position. Fellow defenseman Atkinson was also strong defensively, particularly in helping hold Wisconsin to just 14 shots in the Kendall Classic opener, but he also popped up going forward as well, as he contributed a goal and an assist in Saturday's win against Maine.
The Nanooks play Air Force on Friday at 8:07 and Penn State in the Brice Alaska Goal Rush finale against Penn State on Saturday at 7:07.
RifleThe No. 2 ranked Alaska Nanook Rifle team travels to Texas this weekend to take on two fellow Patriot Rifle Conference foes.
Friday and Saturday the shooters will face the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) at the UTEP Rifle Range.
Sunday the Nanook's will be in Fort Worth, Texas taking on the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs.
Last weekend the Nanook's won back-to-back matches against the University of Tennessee-Martin at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.
On Saturday, the team started off the season in a big way by defeating the Skyhawks 4682-4605.
The charge was led in smallbore by defending National Champion, junior
Tim Sherry who shot a 583/600 followed by redshirt sophomore
Soren Butler and junior
Lorelie Stanfield each with a 582/600. The Nanooks totaled a 2324 for the day in smallbore.
Sunday featured a repeat performance as the Nanook's outshot the University of Tennessee-Martin for the second time in as many days with total scores of 4669 to 4580 respectively.
The Nanooks were led by
Tim Sherry,
Sagen Maddalena and
Lorelie Stanfield who were the top three shooters in both air rifle and smallbore. Sherry shot a match-best 594 in air rifle and 581 in smallbore which was joint match-best along with Maddalena, who added a 592 in air rifle. Stanfield shot a 583 in air rifle and a 578 in smallbore.
SwimmingThe Alaska women's swimming team starts its 2014-15 regular season with a pair of dual meets against Azusa Pacific University on Friday and Saturday.
Friday's meet will begin at 6:00 p.m. while Saturday's is set to start at noon. Saturday's meet can be seen via a live-stream

Last week the swimming competed in the Blue-Gold Pentathlon, an annual inter-squad meet that kicks off the season.
Freshman
Martha Hood, a local product out of North Pole, swam the fastest overall time. She clocked a total time of 5-minutes, 22.88 seconds in the five individual events. Consistency was the key for Hood. She placed second in both the 100 yard butterfly and the 100 yard breaststroke. Hood was the third fastest Nanook in the 100 yard IM. She placed fifth in the 100 yard freestyle and sixth in the 100 yard backstroke respectively.
Senior
Margot Adams finished second individually, posting a total time of 5-miniutes-25 seconds flat. She posted victories in the 100 fly (58.53 seconds), and the 100 IM (1:02.00). Fellow senior
Danielle Lyons claimed third in a total time of 5-minutes, 26.87 seconds.
The relay team of
Gabi Summers, Thanh Nguyen,
Margot Adams and
Danielle Lyons posted a time of 1-minute-49.74.
Sophomore
Victoria Adams won the 100 back with a time of 1-minute-1.89 seconds. Sophomore Thanh Nguyen won the 100 breast in a time of 1-minute, 8.68 seconds. Freshman
Katie Stark claimed the 100 free, posting a time of 55.02 seconds.
VolleyballThe Nanook Volleyball team begins the second half of Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on the road against Montana State University-Billings and Seattle Pacific University.
Alaska will be seeking revenge after falling to both the Yellowjackets and the Falcons in straight sets at the Patty Center in mid-September.

The last time the Nanooks were in action they fell to in-state rival, and league-leader University of Alaska Anchorage in straight sets.
In the UAA match the 'Nooks were led by
Sam Harthun who recorded 13 kills on a .211 hitting percentage.
Brooke Mattice had 11 kills for Alaska while
Miranda Grieser paced the offense with a match-high 26 assists.
Defensively,
Tessa Butterfield contributed a team-high 10 digs and
Riley Podowicz had two total blocks.
