STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Nanooks Nordic skiing team concluded the Colorado Invitational on Saturday, skiing in the 7.5k classic interval start races, and ending the weekend sixth in the Nordic standings with 175 points. The men totaled 142 points over the two races, putting them third among Nordic teams, while the women, who were shorthanded and down to one skier each day, posted 33 points to take sixth.
"Another day of hard racing here in Steamboat!" said interim head coach Ben Buck. "Below freezing temps overnight turned yesterday's slush into ice chunks, making for some tricky kick waxing as the sun rose and temperatures shot back up into the 40s. The team took it all in stride, though, following yesterday's breakthrough with yet another strong performance and setting us up for an exciting Regional Championship weekend!"
Philipp Moosmayer followed up his fourth-place result in Friday's 20k freestyle by posting another fourth-place finish in the classic race, skiing to a time of 21:21.4. Cole Flowers and Matyas Pavek notched a pair of top-20 finishes, with the two sophomores placing 14th and 18th, respectively, with times of 22:02.3 and 22:08.8. Blake Hanley (22:35.9) followed in 21st, and Josh Baurick (23:19.8) placed 25th. The men finished fifth in the classic race, grabbing 63 points.
The Nanooks once again had just one skier competing in the women's race, with Kolibri Drobish taking the reins on Saturday. She finished in 26th place after posting a 27:14.0, grabbing 15 points to put the Nanook women sixth in the 7.5k classic.
With the regular season now over for the 'Nooks, their focus shifts to the RMISA Championships, which are set to take place on Feb. 27-28.
