PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Nanooks hockey team (5-11-1) upset the No. 16-ranked Providence Friars (9-7-2, 4-3-1 HEA) on Saturday, Jan. 3. This was the second win this year over a ranked opponent. The Nanooks last did it on Oct. 10, 2025 against No. 8/9 Quinnipiac at the Icebreaker Tournament in Tempe, Ariz.
How it Happened
Similar to Friday night's game, Providence got on the board early in the first. They needed just 1:52 to make it 1-0 as Logan Sawyer opened the scoring. Despite the early goal,
Calvin Vachon shut the door on PC and paved the way for the Nanooks' offense to score five unanswered goals en route to the win.
Nathan Rickey answered back just over 13 minutes later as the blue-liner scored his second goal of the season from the point. The power-play goal evened the score 15:06 into the first.
Michael Citara and
Chase Dafoe earned the assists on the equalizer.
After the 1-1 tie was carried into the second period,
Chase Dafoe scored the game-winner 4:50 into the period.
Carson Reed earned the lone-assist on the goal. 12:45 into the second,
Rylen Roersma picked up his second goal of the weekend to make it a 3-1 lead. He capitalized on the power play, pushing home a loose puck in the crease.
Hugo Marcil picked up his first-career point with the primary assist and
Misha Danylov added the secondary. Alaska took a 3-1 lead into the final period and would add two more to close the game.
Jhett Larson made it a 4-1 game 7:40 into the third. Marcil added another apple, giving him his first-career multi-point game.
Rylen Roersma also added an assist for his second point of the night. He'd pick up his third point of the night and second assist on the final goal of the game.
Peyton Platter added an empty-netter 19:09.4 into the final stanza, putting the exclamation point on the upset victory.
Carson Reed also added his second assist of the game, giving him three points this weekend after a goal in yesterday's contest.
