ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks skiing team kicked off its season this morning in Anchorage for the first day of the Nordic Cup. The 'Nooks took the top three spots in the men's 10k freestyle, while Rosie Fordham placed first on the women's side. However, the Nanooks trail Alaska Anchorage by 1:08, with the scores decided by adding the top-three times for the men and women.
On the men's side, Ben Dohlby, Philipp Moosmayer and Gabriele Rigaudo locked out the top-three spots. Dohlby finished in 24:23, 38 seconds in front of Moosmayer in second, who recorded a 25:01. Finally, Rigaudo's 25:22 was good enough for a third-place result, finishing nine seconds ahead of UAA's Corbin Carpenter. The 1-2-3 finish gave the Nanooks men's team a 2:02 lead over the Seawolves.
Cole Flowers skied to a sixth-place finish with a 25:38, while Matyas Pavek posted a 26:05, good for 11th. Blake Hanley and Josh Baurick took 15th and 16th, respectively, with times of 26:41 and 26:51.
For the women's team, Fordham finished in her race 27:31, 1:43 in front of the pack to take first convincingly. Piper Sears placed sixth in her first collegiate race after skiing to a 31:51. Victoria Myers also made her debut for the Nanooks, finishing in eighth with a 33:26. Lucca Duke and Anya Simard placed ninth and 10th in the race, respectively, with a 35:25 and 35:46.
The Nanooks are set for one more race to determine the Nordic Cup champion. They race in a 7.5k classic at 10 a.m. tomorrow.
