FAIRBANKS - Head coach Amy Donovan and the Alaska Nanooks women's basketball program have announced the addition of Milo Griffin to their coaching staff. Griffin joins the women's program after spending the 2023-24 season with the men's basketball team as an assistant coach.
"To add someone with Milo's experience to our team is a home run," said coach Donovan on bringing Griffin to the women's basketball program. "His time as a hall-of-fame player at Alaska, as a coach and in the Fairbanks community speaks for itself. Our players and staff can't wait to work with him!"
Griffin graduated as Alaska's all-time leading scorer, posting 1,628 points during his collegiate career. He holds the joint school record for points scored in a single game and previously held records for single-season points per game (26), career free throws made (483) and career free throws attempted (575). Since graduating from Alaska, Griffin has been active in the Fairbanks community, spending over 30 years as a teacher and coach at Lathrop High School. He previously worked as an assistant men's basketball coach at Alaska from 1993-96 under head coach George Roderick. Griffin was inducted into the Alaska Nanooks Hall of Fame in 2008.
He has been a vital part of the growth of Nanooks basketball on both the men's and women's side. Even when not a part of the staff, his appearances in the crowd at games and at practices elevates the game of basketball for Alaska. He hopes to bring the same support and passion for the game to the women's game like he did for the men.
As an Alaska basketball colleague, head men's basketball coach Frank Ostanik sees Griffin's value as he joins the women's staff. "I am happy for our women's program and what Coach Griffin will bring Coach Donovan and her staff."
The Nanooks women's basketball season kicks off on Friday, November 8, in Sacramento, Calif., against Cal Poly Humboldt.
