PORTLAND, Ore. - The Great Northwest Athletic Conference announced their 2023-24 GNAC Women's Basketball All-Conference Teams on Tuesday, March 5.
Kayla Johnson, a 5-10 small forward from Federal Way, Wash., earned the Nanooks' lone nod, being named an Honorable Mention selection. This is her first-career GNAC All-Conference honor and she becomes the first Nanook to be named since last season when
Emma McKenney was named an Honorable Mention selection.
The sophomore was a staple in the lineup, appearing in 27 games, starting 25 of them. In her 793:57 minutes on the court this season, she averaged 10.4 points per game, grabbed 145 total rebounds for 5.4 per game and led the Nanooks from the floor, shooting a team-high 46.6% (118-253). Her 118 made field goals also led Alaska this season. "To be selected All-Conference in a league as strong as the GNAC is quite an honor, and it's one that Kayla truly deserves." said Nanooks head coach
Amy Donovan, "She's a hard worker and fantastic teammate in addition to being quite an accomplished player. I think the sky is the limit for Kayla and am excited to see the mark that she leaves on our program in the next two years."
In 16 contests this season, Johnson put up double-digit points, topping out at 18 on two-separate occasions. In three of those games, she posted a season-high 10 rebounds and finished the year with three double-doubles. Her first double-double came on Jan. 20, 2024 at Central Washington where she finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Her second came in her next game against Saint Martin's on Jan. 25, 2024, a win in Fairbanks that saw Johnson post a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double.Â
Her final double-double came on Feb. 3, 2024 at Simon Fraser as she posted 12 points, 10 rebounds.Â
