Four Women's Basketball Players Earn CSC Academic All-District Honor

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball team had four named to the CSC Academic All-District Team on Tuesday, March 26. Kayla Johnson, Emma McKenney, Destiny Reimers and Jayda Van Dyke all earned the honors. 

"Within Alaska basketball, we place a high premium on academic performance," said head coach Amy Donovan, "and I'm proud of Jayda, Kayla, Emma and Destiny for being named Academic All-District. All four of these athletes are tremendous people and students, and I'm excited to see their hard work be recognized!"

Johnson, a sophomore from Federal Way, Wash., was the long GNAC All-Conference selection for the Nanooks this season. She earned Honorable Mention honors after posting 10.4 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. She shot 46.6% from the floor while dishing out 44 assists, picking up a team-high 31 steals and blocking five shots. Johnson is a psychology major and carries a 3.83 overall grade-point average. McKenney was a senior this past season for the Nanooks and hails from Springfield, Ore. The senior led the 'Nooks in scoring with 294 points scored and 10.9 points per game. She shots 36% from the floor, 33.8% from deep, 85.7% from the free-throw line and grabbed 2.4 rebounds. She led the way with 80 assists and added 15 steals. McKenney has a 3.97 overall grade-point average as a sport and recreation business major. 

Reimers, a juinor from Anchorage, holds a 4.00 overall grade-point average as a rural development major. On the court this season, Reimers missed some games but started in all 19 appearances; she finished with 9.9 points per game while shooting 36.7% from the floor and 73% from the free-throw line. She grabbed 4.8 boards per game and followed McKenney with 72 assists. She blocked 11 shots and picked up 14 steals on the year. Finally, Van Dyke, a junior from Herriman, Utah. As a business administration major, Van Dyke has carried a 3.88 overall grade-point average while with the Nanooks. In her second season with the blue and gold, Van Dyke appeared in every game while starting only three. She put up 2.1 points per game while grabbing 1.67 rebounds. She finished with 31 assists and second on the team with 21 steals. 

To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District honors, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.50 overall GPA, and compete in at least 90 percent or be a starter in at least 66 percent of his or her team's contests.
