Hockey Heads South for Week Two of Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks hockey team will head to Anchorage for the second leg of games in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.

  • The Nanooks 12 goals scored this past weekend was the most in a two-game stretch versus Alaska Anchorage since Oct. 22-23, 1993 when the 'Nooks scored a combined 13 goals (10/22/93 - 6-7 L in OT, 10/23/93 - 7-3 W).
  • The 6-7 OT loss was played in Fairbanks, the 7-3 win was in Anchorage. 
  • The Nanooks scored seven goals for the first time since Feb. 12, 2022 against St. Thomas last year. Before then, the last time the 'Nooks scored seven goals was Dec. 8, 2017 in a 7-2 win over UAA in Anchorage. 
  • MARKUSS KOMULS posted a four-point game on Saturday, Dec. 10 - the first since BRADY RISK's last season at Maine. KOMULS assisted on three goals and tallied one in the 7-2 win. 
  • 18 of the 19 skaters this past weekend scored a point. PAYTON MATSUI posted a +5 to lead the on-ice skaters.
  • BRADY RISK tallied three goals on the weekend and now has three power-play goals on the season to lead the Nanooks. His three power-play goals is the fourth-most by an independent player. RISK now has two game-winning goals, putting him 18th in NCAA Division I and tied for first in the independent rankings. 
  • MATT RADOMSKY moved into the top-20 for goals against average as the transfer now holds a 2.20 average - he is 18th in the nation and the top independent goalie for GAA. 
  • RADOMSKY is 39th in the nation in save percentage and third in independent ranks with a .908 %. Former Nanook GUSTAVS DAVIS GRIGALS leads the nation in save percentage with a .937 average. 
  • HARRISON ISRAELS is 31st in the nation and leads all independent players with 171 faceoff wins ... he currently holds a .529 win perentage.
  • JONNY SORENSON became the first Nanook in double-digit points with three assists on the weekend ... He now leads the way with 11 points on five goals and six assists.
  • It was a weekend of firsts as A.J. MACAULAY and ZACHARY POWER scored their first-career goals against the Seawolves. MACAULAY scored on night two while POWER scored on night one. WILL HILFIKER tallied his first-career point on POWER's goal with the secondary assist. 
  • XAVIER JEAN-LOUIS also tallied his first-career points, tallying two assists on the weekend. He earned the secondary on HARRISON ISRAEL's goal in game one before tallying earning the secondary on ARVILS BERGMANIS' goal in game two. 
  • HARRISON ISRAELS now leads the 'Nooks in scoring as the sophomore captain tallied a goal to give him six on the year. 
  • RADOMSKY on the weekend spent 108:43 in net allowing an average of 1.66 goals and stopping .923% of shots. He stopped 36 on the weekend. LASSI LEHTI made his collegiate debut to end game one. He allowed one goal.
Meet the Opponents
  • Alaska Anchorage enters this weekend with a 2-10-0 record. Their two wins came against Western Michigan in their regular-season opener and Northern Michigan on Oct. 22. 
  • The Seawolves played four-straight exhibition games leading up to last weekend's Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup meeting; they won all four, defeating UNLV 3-1, Liberty 9-1 and sweeping Simon Fraser 6-0 and 4-0. 
  • Matt Shasby is the bench boss of the Seawolves - he's in his first season. Shasby is an Eagle River-native and played for the Seawolves at the turn of the century (1999-2003). During the 2001-02 season, he donned the 'A' and in 2002-03 he wore the captain's 'C'. 
  • Shasby is a former defenseman and his best season came in 2001-02 when he tallied 27 points in 35 games. He ended his professional career with five seasons on the Alaska Aces in the ECHL. He was the Aces 'A' in 2006-07 and wore the 'C' in 2007-08. 
  • The Seawolves are looking for their first Gov Cup win since the 2008-09 season. 
  • Ben Almquist now leads the Seawolves alongside Derek Hamelin with eight points each. Almquist now has two goals and six assists on the season while Hamelin remains at zero goals and eight assists. 
  • William Gilson is ranked 18th in the NCAA Division I with four power-play goals. His four also tie him with Adam Goodsir of LIU and Matthew Kopperud of Arizona State for the most in the independent ranks. GILSON is also 66th in the nation in goals per game with a 0.43/game average. This is fourth in the independent ranks. Jack Randl of Omaha leads the country with an average of 0.83/game and Anthony Vincent of LIU (0.59/game) leads independent players.
  • Nolan Kent is 39th in Division I ice hockey with a 2.55 goals against average and is second in independent ranks, trailing only MATT RADOMSKY. 
  • Nolan Kent is 19th in the country in save percentage with a .921%, he leads all independent goalies.
  • Carter Belitski, William Gilson and Brandon Lajoie are tied for 13th in the nation for short-handed goals, each have one. They and six others are tied for first in the independent ranks. 
  • UAA is 19th in the country with 11.94 penalty minutes per game. Third most by an independent team. 
  • After the second leg of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup, the Seawolves will head to Lowell, Mass. for a two-game matchup at UMass Lowell on Dec. 30-31. They'll then travel to the University of Maine on Jan. 6-7, 2023 and play the Black Bears in Orono, Maine. 
  • The Seawolves and Nanooks meet for the final time on Jan. 27-28, 2023 in a home-and-home. They'll play Connecticut, LIU, Arizona State and Lindenwood to finish the 2022-23 season, their first season back in action after no games in 2020-21 or 2021-22. 
  • Anchorage is back in the Seawolf Sports Complex on the campus of UAA. They'll play all home games in the on-campus venue with an NHL size rink that seats 800.
Looking Ahead
  • After UAA, the Nanooks will take a week break for the holidays. They'll open up the second half of the year with the current #18/19 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind. This will be the first trip to Compton Family Arena since Dec. 31, 2016-Jan. 1, 2017. The Nanooks lost both games, not scoring in games of 4-0 and 5-0. 
  • On Jan. 6-7, 2023, the Nanooks will travel to Magness Arena and face the current #1/1 Denver Pioneers. The Pioneers and Nanooks met last year to open the new year and the 'Nooks left Magness 0-1-1. A day after falling to Denver, the Nanooks tied the eventual national champions 4-4 OT.
  • The Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup will be back in motion on Jan. 27-28, 2023 when the Nanooks head to Anchorage for game one of the home-and-home before returning home on Jan. 28, 2023 for the trophy presentation and game six of the season series. 
  • The Nanooks will welcome Arizona State in the first weekend of February. The Sun Devils will make their third-ever trip to Fairbanks for a two-game weekend on Feb. 3-4, 2023 in the Carlson Center.
