Abdullahi Mohamed Named a Unanimous Selection for the 2022-23 Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Selection

PORTLAND, Ore. - Abdullahi Mohamed of the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team was a unanimous selection for the 2022-23 Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team.

Mohamed, a 6-8 forward from Seattle, Wash. is entering his junior year of athletic eligibility and second season with the Alaska Nanooks men's basketball program. During his first year, the 2021-22 season, he helped the Nanooks go on a historical run, making it all the way to the 2022 NCAA West Regional Final/Sweet 16 before falling to Chico State.

"Abdul had a great second half of the season last year." Said head coach Greg Sparling, "He really gained a lot of confidence and was able to take his game to the next level on the floor. He was a major contributor in helping us win the GNAC Championship and also our success at the national tournament. We are looking for Abdul to continue to grow and have an outstanding season."

For the season, Mohamed was the third-highest scorer for the Nanooks, posting 11.1 points per game on 321 points scored. He played in all 29 games on the season, starting in all but three. While averaging 25.0 minutes a game, he added a 48.1 shooting percentage, 77.8 free-throw percentage, hit four of five threes, grabbed 167 rebounds for an average of 5.8 per game, blocked 14 shots and stole 14 balls and assisted on 33 buckets. Mohamed's biggest contributions came down the stretch in the final half of the season. At the midway point of the season, the Nanooks used an 81-75 victory over the Western Washington Vikings to start a three-game win streak and set up Mohamed for a huge final 15 games. He posted 21 points and 11 rebounds in the win over WWU. In the remaining 14 games he scored 10+ in eight times, scoring 20+ two more times and posting a career-high 32 points and 10 rebounds against Northwest Nazarene in the GNAC Championships Quarterfinals in an 83-62 win.

During that stretch, Mohamed averaged 15.2 points per game, scoring 228 points, while shooting 50.9% from the floor, 77.9% from the free-throw line and grabbing 7.3 rebounds per game.

Mohamed is the lone-Nanook selected for the GNAC MBB Preseason All-Conference Team. Cameron Cranston of Western Oregon was selected as the Preseason Player of the Year.
