FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks men's basketball team has announced the signing of Javares Reid. Reid, a 6-9 forward, joins the blue and gold from Lower Columbia College in the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC).
"I could not be more excited to add Javares to our team," said head coach
Frank Ostanik. "The first time Coach Karlberg showed me his film, I knew this was a player we wanted in our program. Javares' size, length, and skill will allow him to have an immediate impact on our program and our ability to compete for a conference championship. It's rare to find someone of his size and skill set who also has an elite motor and deep love for the game of basketball." Reid hails from Las Vegas, Nev., and attended Rosemary Anderson Prep. At Lower Columbia, Reid played in 42 career games over the span of two seasons. In year one, he played in 33 games, making 19 starts. He shot 49.4% from the floor and grabbed 134 total rebounds for 4.1 per game. His. 6.3 points per game helped lead LC to the 2024-25 NWAC Championship. He added 27 blocks and 13 steals in the championship season.
His sophomore season was shortened due to injury, but he still produced at a strong rate through nine games. He averaged 10.7 points and 3.9 rebounds per game while shooting 51.5% from the floor. He had six blocks and three steals through nine games while also posting a career-high 24 points on 10-18 shooting in the 2025-26 season opener at Portland. He added seven boards, three assists, a block, and a steal in the win.
"From the first time I spoke to Javares, I felt a strong connection," added Coach Ostanik. "He has a deep love of the game combined with a level of humility that is unique in today's world. I was also impressed with how easily Javares connected with our current players. I am very happy for Fairbanks and for our fans to have the opportunity to watch and get to know Javares. With the signing of Ethen Stoddard and Javares, we have transformed our team. We struggled last year to protect the rim and score around the basket. Both Ethen and Javares will immediately impact our team and allow us to compete against the bigger teams in the GNAC and throughout the West Region. I want to commend Coach Karlberg on the job he has done. Finding big men has been challenging, but this Spring we were able to identify the two guys we most wanted and convince both players to come North. The time, effort, and work necessary to accomplish that task are extraordinary. It's a great day to be a Nanook."
Additional signings will be announced this week.
