Complete GNAC Release

PORTLAND, Ore. – Alex Sommerfield, a senior forward from Federal Way, Wash., was the lone-Nanook selected to the 2020-21 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Basketball All-Academic Team, presented by Barnes & Noble College.

Sommerfield is a digital journalism major and has maintained a 4.0 GPA in his year and a half with the Nanooks program. A year ago, in his first season with Alaska, Alex played in 30 games, starting in 10 while averaging 7.1 points per game and 3.2 rebounds per game.

He was one of three GNAC men's basketball student-athletes to boast a 4.0.

Head coach Greg Sparling had this to say about Sommerfield's commitment to the court and classroom, "That's excellent for Alex and our program. He works hard off the floor and also on the floor. I couldn't be more excited for him, that's an award he can use down the road when applying for jobs, I think that Alex is only going to get better on the floor and off the floor."

The Nanooks opted-out of the 2020-21 men's basketball season due to COVID and look forward to being on the court in 2021-22.
