Women's Basketball Opens Conference Play at Western Oregon and Saint Martin's

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team begins their GNAC-conference play this weekend with trips to Western Oregon and Saint Martin's.

Last Time Out
The women's basketball team is coming off of an 0-3 weekend at the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. The Tampa Spartans took the championship, going 3-0 on the weekend. Alaska fell to Tampa on day one, battling the #14-ranked (WBCA) Tampa. They fell 77-69 to the Spartans. Alaska went on to fall to Northwood on day two, 76-61 and Southern Nazarene on the final day of the Invitational 87-62. 
 
All-Tournament
Freshman guard Destiny Reimers was named to the NSI All-Tournament Team after averaging 14.6 points per game. She tallied a total of 18 rebounds, nine steals and five assists through the three games played. 
 
GNAC Schedule
Alaska opens up their GNAC season this week with trips to Western Oregon and Saint Martin's. They'll open up play on Thursday at the New PE Building on the campus of WOU taking on the Wolves. WOU enters the matchup with a 3-3 record after their non-conference season. They opened their season with a loss to #25-ranked Hawaii Pacific before defeating Willamette for their first win. They knocked-off Chico State and Sonoma State before falling to Texas A&M Kingsville. They are led by Meadow Aragon who is averaging 13.0 points per game while also leading the team in rebounds with 7.3 per game. 
 
The Saints of Saint Martin's just entered the top-25 D2SIDA Poll, coming in at #25. SMU enters this week at 5-1. They'll play Alaska Anchorage before seeing the Nanooks, but SMU started the year 5-0 before falling to Texas A&M International this past week for their first loss of the season. They beat Hawaii Pacific, Pacific Lutheran, Sonoma State, Chico State and St. Mary's. The Saints are led by Claire Dingus who through six games and six starts is averaging 19.8 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. She has 25 offensive rebounds, one more than her defensive rebound total. She also leads the team with 12 steals.
 
What's to Come
Following the GNAC-openers, the Nanooks will immediately go on break for the holidays. They'll come back and host Montana State Billings and Seattle Pacific on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1. They'll be in GNAC-play the rest of the way out.

Around the GNAC
Through the opening weeks of the women's basketball season, the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves are at the top with a 5-0 record to open the season. Western Washington is also 5-0 to open up the season. SMU comes in at 5-1, CWU and NNU are 4-2, MSUB is 5-4. Western Oregon is 3-4, Seattle Pacific is 3-4 and Simon Fraser is 3-5 while Alaska checks in at 1-4. 
 
Stats Update
Through five games the Nanooks are led by the dynamic-duo of Pearle Green and Destiny Reimers. Green is the high-scorer on the Alaska roster, averaging 15.0 points per game through five starts. She also has 15 assists and nine steals. Destiny Reimers is just behind with 14.6 points per game. Alongside her scoring, she is averaging a team-high 6.2 rebounds. She's also added nine steals on the season. 
 
Paola Perez-Mendoza is leading the team in steals, grabbing 17 through five games.
