BIG RAPID, Mich. – The Alaska Nanooks hockey team grabbed a 6-3 victory over the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 18, giving the 'Nooks their first series-sweep since Oct. 11-12, when they opened up WCHA play against Michigan Tech. With the six points this weekend, the Nanooks are now 13-12-1, 11-8-1-0 WCHA.
The Nanooks were the first to strike in the final meeting of the regular season between these two teams. 8:39 into the opening period,
Steven Jandric used an FSU defender as a screen from the slot and put a shot glove-side on Austin Shaw, blowing the puck to the back of net and giving the 'Nooks an early 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later, 16:23 into the period,
Kylar Hope answered the next call, extending the Alaska lead to 2-0 after
Steven Jandric centered a pass in front of the crease to Hope on the backside.
The 2-0 lead would remain through the first intermission, extending the Nanooks shutout streak to four full periods.
This streak would soon come to an end, however, when FSU grabbed a goal 2:14 into the second period, pulling within one goal. Thankfully, Alaska held all the answers to the Bulldogs offensive spurts. Three minutes later,
Kylar Hope grabbed his second goal of the night when
Steven Jandric connected to Hope again, making it 3-1.
Just another three minutes later, the Bulldogs connected twice in 30 seconds, tying the game up at 3-3.
Justin Young then connected for his eighth goal of the season, bringing the lead and momentum back to the Nanooks side of the ice. Only one minute after Ferris State tied things up, Young took a pass in front of the net from
Tyler Cline and jammed the puck home. To finish the scoring off for the second period and the game the 'Nooks grabbed two more,
James LaDouce came up on a loose puck from the face-off circle and squeezed a slap shot five whole on Carter McPhail, the second goalie in net for FSU on the night.
To end the scoring,
Colton Leiter grabbed the sixth Alaska goal of the night and the seventh of the second period, grabbing the puck from Young and
Tristan Thompson, making it 6-3 Nanooks.
That score would stay through the third period and become the final score. Martinsson ended the night with 34 saves, stopping all 13 shots on net in the final period.
Steven Jandric,
Kylar Hope and
Justin Young all ended the night with multiple points, Jandric leading the way with three while Hope and Young added two each.
