ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team lost to the Westminster Griffins 64-84 on Friday, Nov. 22.. This loss brings the team record to 2-3 on the season.
The Nanooks got off to a slow start on offense shooting 36.8%, which led to them trailing 16-25 at the end of the first quarter. A better effort in the second led to the team being down 41-31 at the half.
Kylie Wallace led the way for the team going 5-7 from the field with 11 points,
Sabrina Ungaro led in assists with four, and
Jocelyn Gandara owned the glass with five rebounds at the end of the second quarter.
Another slow start coming out of the half, combined with Westminster shooting 56% coming out of the locker room led to the 'Nooks being down 46-64 at the end of the third quarter. A much better effort by the team wasn't enough to overcome the deficit and the Nanooks lost 64-84. The Griffins were led in scoring by Mariah Martin, who had 26 points on the night, and shot 11-18 from the field. Alaska was led in scoring by
Sam Tolliver, scored 16 points and went 6-13 from the field. Tolliver and
Sabrina Ungaro led in assist with five and
Jocelyn Gandara led in rebounds with seven for the night.
Head coach
Kerri Nakamoto had this to say about her team's efforts, "I thought we definitely showed improvement on the things we have been focusing on at practice that we didn't do well last week. Credit to Westminster they are a very good team that made us pay every mistake we made and shot the lights out. We had a lot of really great possessions on both ends of the floor and we will continue to try to decrease our mistakes."
The Nanooks shot 39.7% from the field, 30.4% from behind the line and went 7-13 from the free throw line. The 'Nooks look to shake off this loss and prepare for their upcoming game Saturday against the Parkside Rangers.
