FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball program announced another addition to the roster in 5-10 junior transfer Genevieve Velasquez.

"We're excited to welcome Genevieve to the Nanook family," said head coach Michael Ricks. "She's a hard-working, high-energy guard who plays with versatility and toughness. Gigi has the ability to impact the game in a lot of different ways, and her competitive drive will be a strong addition to our program."

Velasquez spent the past two seasons playing with the Shasta College Knights in Redding, Calif. The Orland, Calif., native averaged 7.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in two years with the Knights, shooting 36.4% from the field. During the 2023-24 season, she appeared in 27 games, posting 6.8 points, eight rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game, with a field-goal percentage of 31.3%. In her sophomore campaign, Velasquez played in 24 games and increased her scoring to 8.9 points per game on 42.4% shooting while averaging 7.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.9 steals per contest. She reached double-digit points on 15 occasions in her two seasons at Shasta, scoring a career-high 19 in a game against Butte College on Feb. 15, 2025. She knocked down six of her 11 shot attempts during the game, went 3-4 from deep and grabbed eight boards.

She earned a spot on the Golden Valley Conference All-Freshman team in 2023-24 and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2024-25.

Velasquez shared her excitement about joining the squad. "I'm grateful for the chance to continue my basketball career at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Thank you to everyone who's supported me along the way. I'm ready to get to work and make an impact."

Velasquez is the ninth addition to the Nanooks women's basketball roster for the 2025-26 season.
