Nanooks Host In-State Rivals Alaska Anchorage This Weekend

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball team returns to Fairbanks this weekend for one game against in-state rivals Alaska Anchorage on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks opened 2025 on the road with GNAC games against Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene last week. They fell to CWU 54-87 before dropping a high-scoring contest against NNU 90-115.

The 'Nooks kept things close for most of the game against the Wildcats, with both teams entering the halftime break tied at 31. The third quarter saw six lead changes, but 12 unanswered points helped CWU build a double-digit lead, and after only managing five points in the final 10 minutes, the Nanooks fell to the Wildcats. Destiny Reimers led the Nanooks with 14 points during the contest on 6-of-11 shooting. She also grabbed four rebounds. Kayla Johnson posted seven points, going 3-for-7 from the field, and swiped three steals. Jayda Van Dyke led the team with four steals on the evening. She finished with six points, knocking down three of her four shot attempts from the floor. Taylor Pilot grabbed a team-high five rebounds and collected two steals. The Nanooks shot 36.7% from the floor and 23.5% from deep. They notched 21 points off turnovers compared to 12 for the Wildcats, but trailed in second-chance points (11-3), bench points (27-21) and points in the paint (38-32).

Alaska posted its second-highest scoring total of the season against the Nighthawks but still fell by a final of 90-115. Miranda Lomax led the Nanooks with 26 points, with all her field goals coming via the three ball. She went 7-of-14 from beyond the arc and 5-of-8 from the line. Anna Nevison put up 18 points and, like Lomax, had all her field goals come from three-pointers. She shot 6-of-10 from deep. Reimers was the other Nanook to post double-digit points, finishing the contest with 10 and going 3-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. She grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, tied for the team lead in steals with three and dished out four assists. Van Dyke led the way in the assists department, dishing out five. She posted three steals, tying for the team lead, and finished with eight points on 3-of-5 shooting. Alaska was outrebounded 51-32 in the game. The Nanooks got 60 points from their bench, compared to 38 for the Nighthawks. However, NNU led in points off turnovers (26-21), second-chance points (22-5), points in the paint (44-20) and fastbreak points (22-3).

The Seawolves have gone undefeated in GNAC play so far this season, winning their first four games against Saint Martin's (78-58), Western Oregon (108-41), Northwest Nazarene (72-59) and Central Washington (68-61). Their two losses on the season have come against Point Loma (64-66) and Hawaii Pacific (51-54).

UAA has the best scoring offense and defense in the GNAC, averaging the sixth-most points in DII (83.3) and giving up the second-fewest in the nation (45.1). Their scoring margin of 38.1 points is the best in the country. They lead DII in turnover margin (14.9), while ranking second in rebound margin at 15.1 and steals per game with 19.5.

The Seawolves are led by Elaina Mack, who averages 14.3 points per game, ranking seventh in the GNAC. Her 39.1 field goal and 39.8 three-point percentages are good for seventh and fifth, respectively. She has knocked down the third-most three-pointers per game in DII with 3.13.
