Nanooks Rifle Hosts UTEP for NCAA Qualifier this Saturday

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks home-schedule comes to an end on Saturday, Feb. 17 against UTEP as they host their NCAA Qualifier at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of their third-place finish at the 2024 Patriot Rifle Conference Championships in Fort Wayne, Ind. On day one, the Nanooks posted a 2348 in smallbore, led by Rachael Charles' 592. On day two, Charles led the way again with a 597 in air rifle, while the Nanooks put up a 2379 and finished with an aggregate score of 4727. 

Charles went on to take the individual PRC smallbore title and overall PRC most outstanding shooter award. Freshman Ellie Spencer took the win on day two, grabbing the individual PRC air rifle championship.

  • There will be only one relay in this weekend's match. 
  • Sára Karasová and Charles lead the Nanooks in aggregate averages on the season. Charles is No. 1 with an 1185.5 average while Karasová follows with an 1181.2 average, the only two over 1180. 
  • Akihito Shimizu follows with an 1178.25, Ellie Spencer has posted an average of 1174.6 and Marina Gonzalez Mazo has an 1172.8.
  • As a team, the Nanooks have the third-best aggregate average in the nation. They are shooting an average of 4722.9, trailing only TCU and West Virginina. 
  • Alaska is riding a nine-match winning streak over UTEP dating back to Nov. 3, 2012. The two sides have met in the last two NCAA qualifiers.
  • On Feb. 18, 2023, the Nanooks traveled to UTEP and defeated the Miners 4731-4557. The year before, on Feb. 19, 2022, UTEP came to Fairbanks and the 'Nooks outshot them 4740-4604.

Following this weekend's match, the only remaining calendar item for the Nanooks is the 2024 NCAA Rifle Championships on March 8-9 at West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va.

Senior Day
The Nanooks will celebrate one senior on Saturday; Marina Gonzalez Mazo. This season, Gonzalez Mazo has shot a smallbore average of 581.4 and an air rifle average of 591.4. Her best smallbore outing came on Nov. 19 when the Nanooks hosted Akron and Kentucky. She posted a 587, including a 198 in prone. Her best air rifle performance came on Jan. 20 at Navy when she posted a 597. On Nov. 19, 2023, the same day as her smallbore score, she posted her high-score of the season with an aggregate of 1180. 

Meet the Opponents
This season, UTEP is shooting an average aggregate score of 4577. They pair that with an average smallbore score of 2262.5 and an air rifle score of 2314.5. Micah Hames leads the way for the Miners with an aggregate average of 1157. Her smallbore average is 572.33 while her air rifle average is 584.667.
