FAIRBANKS - It was a tight final score, but the Gold Team took the win in the annual Blue/Gold Meet held at the Patty Center Pool by the Alaska Nanooks swim team. This officially kicked-off their 2023-24 season.Â
The dozen-event morning saw a 400-yard medley relay get the first points on the board. The Blue Team made up of
Charlotte Fletcher-Stables,
Shannon McCallum, Addeline Berry and
Payton Wojciechowicz grab first-place by three seconds. They posted a finishing time of 4:22.60, defeating the Gold relay team made up of
Lainey Lioi,
Dorka Dancsok,
Mesa Moran and
Kaidence Sampsel. They finished in 4:25.72. The second event was the 200-yard freestyle. Gold grabbed their first win of the day with
Naomi Burgan finishing in first by nearly six full seconds. She paced a 2:05.70 winning time while second-place,
Tori Shoemaker of the Blue Team, finished in 2:11.18. Wojciechowicz followed close behind in third, finishing in 2:11.60.
Lori Houghton (4th - 2:12.67) and
Kylee Carter (5th - 2:26.35) rounded out the scoring in event two.Â
Dancsok grabbed a win in the 100-yard breaststroke, beating
Shannon McCallum by 11 seconds. Dancsok finished in 1:09.35 while McCallum wrapped up in 1:20.39. Gold made it three-straight wins in the pool when
Lainey Lioi won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.43, besting Shoemaker by over a second and a half (28.10). Berry took third with a 28.32, Sampsel took fourth with a 28.53 and Wojciechowicz took fifth with a 28.88. Fletcher-Stables got Blue back in the winners circle with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke. She posted a winning time of 2:15.76, winning by nearly 20 seconds.
Mesa Moran took second (2:35.02) and Burgan took third (2:38.36).
Adeline Berry won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.68. Her Blue teammate,
Lori Houghton, followed in second and a time of 1:10.31. Sampsel was the lone Gold racer and took third with a time of 1:14.96. Dancsok returned to the top of the podium in the 200-yard IM. She won it in 2:11.55, winning by over 22 seconds.
Mesa Moran took second, Fletcher-Stables took third, Wojciechowicz took fourth and Carter took fifth.
Lainey Lioi grabbed another freestyle victory, taking first in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 57.80. She was the only sub-minute time on the day as
Shannon McCallum followed in second with a 1:00.18 and
Tori Shoemaker followed in third with a 1:02.70.Â
Gold took three of the final events. Dancsok won another in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a winning time of 2:29.81.
Shannon McCallum took second with a time of 2:50.71, Houghton took third (2:51.83) and Carter took fourth (3:03.82). Fletcher-Stables won the final event for Blue, taking the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.25.
Lainey Lioi followed in second and
Kaidence Sampsel took third.Â
Mesa Moran won the final indiviual event on the day, taking first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:28.71. She beat
Naomi Burgan (2nd - 2:33.27) and
Adeline Berry (3rd - 2:41.42). Finally, Gold won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:58.93. They bested the Blue team by less than two seconds. Blue posted a time of 4:00.71.Â
The Nanooks officially kick their season off on Oct. 20-21 at the Patty Center Pool when Azusa Pacific comes to town.Â
