Nanooks Men's Basketball Hosts Seattle Mountaineers for Pair of Scrimmages

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team will welcome the Seattle Mountaineers for a pair of scrimmages on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 29 at 3:00 p.m. Neither game will have a live stream or live stats.

Last Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team is back after hosting their Blue/Gold scrimmage last weekend on Sunday, Oct. 23. The Gold Team took the 77-64 win over the Blue Team. Paul Johnson took home the three-point championship, knocking off teammate Nick Hopkins 11-5 in the round-robin and knock-out style shooting competition. 

Canned Food Drive
The Nanooks men's basketball team will be hosting a canned food drive at both games this weekend. Donations and canned food donations will all go to the Fairbanks Community Food Bank. 

Halloween Vibes
Wear your best costume this Friday's game at the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium! We'll celebrate Halloween in style with Nanooks basketball, costumes in the crowd and candy! 

Nanook65 Golden Ale
Come out to the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium at the Patty Center for some weekend hoops. While you're there, check out the new 21+ wet side and enjoy a Nanook65 Golden Ale, brewed by Latitude 65 Brewing Company. Nanook 65 Golden Ale is described as an approachable and full-flavored ale with tangerine and floral hop notes and a nice crisp finish. It will be available at Alaska Nanooks hockey games at the Carlson Center, The Pub and in the tap room at the Latitude 65 brewery. One dollar per pint will go toward scholarships for Alaska Nanooks student-athletes.

The Alaska Nanooks' concessions stand will serve the newly released Nanook 65 Golden Ale (read more here) for $8 a pint with $1 of each purchase going towards student-athlete scholarships and other options including; hard seltzer and cider, individual sized sangria/red/white wine options and limited selection of Bud Light, Coors Light and Michelob Ultra. The northwest side of the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium (across from benches) will act as the "wet" area while the bench, scorer's table side and upper mezzanine area will remain "dry" with no alcoholic drinks allowed. 
 
Everyone seated in the lower bowl "wet" area will be carded upon entrance and anyone under the age of 21 must be accompanied by a legal parent or guardian over the age of 21.

  • Abdullahi Mohamed was recently announced as a unanimous choice for the 2022-23 GNAC Men's Basketball Preseason All-Conference Team. The junior forward from Seattle, Wash. is coming off of a career-year that saw him post 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. He also shot 48.1% from the floor and 77.8% from the free-throw line. 
  • The Nanooks earned 20 points in the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll. They were predicted to finish 10th in the GNAC this season.
  • Western Oregon's Cameron Cranston was selected as the GNAC Preseason Player of the Year. 
  • Saint Martin's was selected as the GNAC preseason favorite. 
  • Alaska loses Shadeed Shabazz, Quin Barnard, Koby Huerta, Willie Thomas, Marcus Lee, Jaren Carle, Jahvonta Jones and Coleman Sparling from the 2021-22 team. 
  • Alongside Mohamed, they return Nick Hopkins, Mawich Kachjaani and Tybenn Sturm. 
  • This is the second-straight season that the Nanooks and Seattle Mountaineers will play a two-game scrimmage series to open the season. The two played a pair of scrimmage last season on Saturday, Oct. 30 and Sunday, Oct. 31. 
Upcoming Schedule
The Nanooks will officially open up their 2022-23 season on Friday, Nov. 11 at Hawaii Pacific in the Alaska/Hawaii Challenge. They'll follow up with a game against Chaminade the following day. After Hawaii, the Nanooks will remain on the road and travel to Cal State Monterey Bay where they'll take on CSUMB and Cal State East Bay on Nov. 18-19. Following the Bay Area, the Nanooks will return home and open up their home-schedule with a Thanksgiving tournamnet. They'll welcome Alaska Anchorage, Texas A&M International and Westminster College. The 'Nooks and Seawolves will not play, but the two teams will play Texas A&M Int'l and Westminster on Nov. 25-26 before opening up GNAC play on Dec. 1 as the Nanooks welcome Seattle Pacific to town. 

Coaches
Greg Sparling returns for the Nanooks as the head coach for his fifth year. Andrew Hedman also returns for the Nanooks and Quinn Daugharty joins the Nanooks coaching staff for the 2022-23 season.

Banner Season
The Nanooks men's basketball team unveiled their newest banners in the Alaska Airlines Gymnasium at the Patty Center. They unveiled the 2022 GNAC Championship and 2022 NCAA West Regional Final/Sweet 16 banner, giving them their first banner since the 2005 GNAC Championship and Sweet 16 trip. 

No Stream
This weekend's pair of Seattle Mountaineers games will have no stream/live stats. Admission will be free to all! Tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. AKT on night one and 3:00 p.m. on day two. All regular-season games can be found on YouTube for free! All home games will be on the Alaska Nanooks athletics YouTube page. All away games will be found on the respective opponents YouTube pages (if a GNAC opponent).
