FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanook hockey team and head coach Erik Largen have announced the hiring of their newest Associate Head Coach, Chris Brown. Brown, the former head coach of Augsburg University's men's ice hockey team, will officially start on August 30.

"Chris is an amazing addition to our staff. First off, I want to thank Chancellor White and our Director of Athletics, Brock Anundson for the constant support of our program. We are not only adding a great coach but an unbelievable person," Largen said. "Chris will not only prepare our student-athletes for pro hockey, but will also prepare them for life after UAF."

Brown led to Auggies for 15 years, compiling a 192-153-30 record, giving him the second-most wins in program history while also winning three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championships, MIAC Playoff titles in four consecutive years and four consecutive NCAA DIII National Playoff appearances. He earned MIAC Coach of the Year honors three separate occasions (2006-07, 2015-16, 2018-19) and had a 117-84-24 record in conference play.

After completing his collegiate career at Wisconsin-River Falls, Brown immediately jumped into the coaching ranks, beginning his career as an assistant at Augsburg for the 1996-97 season. He made the leap to Anchorage following his one season where he served as the DI Seawolves assistant coach from 1997 to 2000. Following his time in Alaska, Brown was named head coach at Marian College (Wis.). In his four seasons, he tallied a 65-36-7 record and won Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year honors twice (2001-02, 2003-04). He made his return to the MIAC in 2004, being named head coach at Hamline University for one season before returning to Augsburg as an assistant in 2005-06. He was then named head coach and remained for the past 15 seasons. In his 20 years as a collegiate head coach, Brown compiled a 261-209-38 cumulative record.

"We are extremely excited to bring Chris Brown aboard," said Director of Athletics, Brock Anundson. "The championship caliber programs and elite-level players he has developed speak to his character and ability. This, paired with Coach Largen and his staff, will provide Nanook hockey with an enhanced advantage all around."

The Nanooks begin their season with their annual Blue/Gold game on Friday, Sept. 24 at the Carlson Center and follow up with an exhibition game against Simon Fraser University at the Carlson Center the next night, Sept. 25 at 7:07 p.m.
