TEMPE, Ariz. - The Nanooks hockey team battled No. 15 Arizona State (2-2-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) in the 2025 Icebreaker Tournament championship game on Saturday, Oct. 11. They fell to ASU 5-2 to claim second-place. Alaska is now 1-3-0 on the season.
How it Happened
Neither side found the back of the net through the opening 15 minutes. After an Alaska penalty sent ASU to the power play, Logan Morrell broke the 0-0 tie with a power-play goal 15:26 into the first. The 1-0 deficit carried into the second. The Sun Devils scored again on the power play 7:09 into the second. Ty Nash made it 2-0. Nearly seven minutes later, the Nanooks got on the board, scoring a power-play goal of their own.
Michael Citara fired a shot on net from the point and
Chase Dafoe redirected the shot out front of the crease for his first goal of the year. The captain's goal also cut the deficit in half, pulling it to a 2-1 game.
Nathan Rickey picked up the secondary assist, his second point of the year. Entering the third, Alaska was searching for the equalizer, but unfortunately ASU put the game out of reach. 13:44 into the third Cruz Lucius scored the third power-play goal for ASU before he scored again less than two minutes later.
Michael Citara would get the Nanooks back to within two with a snipe 16:41 into the third, but an additional empty-netter by ASU made it a 5-2 final.
