IRVINE, Calif. – The Alaska Nanook swim team remained in seventh place after day two of the PCSC Championships on Thursday, Apr. 15, 2021. The Nanooks have now tallied 337 team points after posting 124 on day one.
Day two consisted of seven events, the 200-yard medley relay, 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard IM, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay to end the day.
In the opening race, the 200-yard medley relay, the 'Nooks sent a team of
Erika Kakazu,
Whitney McArthur,
Oda Bygdnes and
Lainey Lioi to the pool. The four battled their way to a top-five finish, finishing fifth with a time of 1:49.70. This was an improvement from their initial seeding time of 1:53.31. Bygdnes led the way in the second event, the 100-yard butterfly, as the senior flew to a first-place finish behind a time of 56.61, annihilating her seed time of 59.66.
Gabrielle Davy was the next Nanook to finish, picking up a 23
rd place finish and a time of 1:03.03. Just behind her, and finishing the scoring for Alaska, was
Mesa Moran. She finished in 25
th place with a time of 1:04.06.
The third event of the day, the 400-yard IM, saw
Caroline McCormick lead the way for Alaska as she finished in 15
th overall place with a time of 4:53.81. She beat her seed time by over 10 seconds (5:04.60). No other 'Nooks competed in the 400 IM.
Shannon McCallum was the top-finisher for the Nanooks in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing 22
nd overall with a time of 2:00.61, over six seconds better than her seed time.
Lainey Lioi followed behind in 25
th place and a time of 2:01.57.
Kyleigh McArthur and Jasmine Cheung rounded out the Nanooks swimmers in the 200 free with 31
st and 35
th place finishes, respectively.
Two 'Nooks competed in the 100-yard breaststroke,
Whitney McArthur and
Taryn Aho. McArthur grabbed a top-10 finish, finishing ninth with a time of 1:09.18 while Aho finished 20
th overall with a time of 1:18.27. In the second-to-last event,
Oda Bygdnes led the way, once again, this time picking up fifth in the 100-yard backstroke. She pushed across the finish line with a 58.90.
Erika Kakazu joined her in the top-10 with a time of 1:00.66, good enough for ninth place. Cassie Erdman took 29
th place with a time of 1:12.49, improving from her seeding-time of 1:16.52.
In the final event, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Nanooks sent a team of
Gabrielle Davy,
Taryn Aho,
Tori Shoemaker and
Shannon McCallum. The four settled for eighth place, swimming to a time of 8:21.80. They improved on their seeding-time by two seconds (8:23.88).

We were excited about today's swims! We had all season-bests, a few lifetime-bests and an individual event champion. We are very pleased with the team morale and everybody continuing to support each other. This has been a challenging meet and our ladies have found their stride and are doing such an amazing job. Proud of the work they have put in and the competitive attitude they are showing.
The Nanooks are back in action one more time on Friday, Apr. 16 in Irvine, Calif. as they wrap-up the PCSC Championships and their revised 2020-21 season.
