Nanooks WBB Preps for GNAC-Opener as Seattle Pacific Comes to Town

FAIRBANKS – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is set to continue their 2021-22 season with the Seattle Pacific Falcons on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2022.

Last Time Out
The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team is coming off of three-straight postponed matchups. They have not played since they hosted Northwood, Southern Nazarene and Tampa for the 2021 Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational. In the Invitational, the Nanooks fell in all three games. They battled the #14-ranked Tampa Spartans but fell 77-69. They then fell to Northwood 76-61 and Southern Nazarene 87-62. 
 
Quick Hitters
  • Pearle Green and Destiny Reimers are the leading scorers for the Nanooks. Green is averaging 15.0 points per game while Reimers is just behind averaging 14.6 per game. Green is currently sixth in the GNAC in scoring and Reimers is seventh, just trailing her teammate.
  • Emma Wass has made her presence in the post known as the transfer is shooting 65.0% from the field (13-20).
  • Green is the team-leader for most three-pointers made. She is the only Nanook with over 10 made 3FG's with 16 made. She is averaging 3.2 made per game, top in the GNAC. Claudia Diez Marti is second with five, averaging one per game. 
  • Paola Perez-Mendoza is second in the GNAC as she averages 4.4 assists per game. She is also leading the conference in steals per game, averaging 3.4 on 17 total steals. 
  • Ellen Silva has played a big part in the post-game for the Nanooks alongside Wass. Silva, the transfer from UAA, is averaging 1.4 blocks per game, good for third in the GNAC. She has seven through five games. 
  • The Nanooks are looking for their first home-win this season after dropping three in the Mt. McKinley Bank North Star Invitational.
  • This is the Nanooks first GNAC game of the season following three postponements.
 
Meet the Opponents
Seattle Pacific comes into this weekend's matchup riding a win over Puget Sound on Dec. 18, 2021 heading into holiday break. Prior to the win over the Loggers, SPU fell in three straight to Northwest Nazarene, Cal State Stanislaus and Cal State East Bay. Ashley Alter is the leading-scorer for the Falcons. Through 11 games, she is averaging 11.6 points per game, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists. SPU comes in as the 10thscoring team in the GNAC but the third best defensive team, allowing 59.3 points per game. 
 
They give up the third least turnovers, averaging 15.9 and are one of the best teams from the perimeter, shooting 32.1% from deep. They currently sit at 5-7, 1-0 GNAC and are in fourth place.
