Nanooks Drop Road Contest at St. Cloud State

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Alaska Nanooks women's basketball team (0-6, 0-0 GNAC) fell to the St. Cloud Huskies (3-3,0-1 NSIC) 101-53 on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
The Huskies got out to an early 9-0 lead within the first two minutes of action, going 4-5 from the field during the run. Tamai Mancuso got Alaska on the board with a three at the 7:34 mark and added a layup later in the half, but the Nanooks were outscored 30-9 in the opening 10 minutes.

Mancuso and Marney Rees notched a pair of layups to open the second, and Emily Freeman connected on an attempt from deep two minutes later, but the Nanooks could not cut into the Huskies' lead, and despite a three-point play by Grace Gillespie, Alaska entered the half down 47-23.

Rees provided the offense for the Nanooks to start the third, knocking down a pair of layups in the opening two and a half minutes, and Chozen Horn-Young, Mancuso and Desiree Redfox all connected from three-point range later in the period. However, the Blue & Gold entered the final 10 minutes trailing 73-38. Mancuso went 3-4 from deep during the final quarter to score a team-high nine points in the fourth.

Inside the Numbers

  • Tamai Mancuso finished with a team-high 22 points on 8-21 shooting, going 5-12 from three. She also dished two assists and grabbed a rebound.
  • Emily Freeman scored seven points, knocking down 2-9 shots from deep. She had two rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists.
  • Marney Rees led the team with seven rebounds while scoring six points on 3-5 shooting. She also had two steals and an assist.
  • Alycia Shelley finished with four assists and five points.
  • Alaska shot 18-52 (34.6%) from the field and 10-28 (35.7%) from three while converting seven of their 14 attempts from the free throw line.
  • The Nanooks were outrebounded 59-26.


What's Next
The Nanooks begin GNAC play next week, starting with a Thursday afternoon contest at Western Oregon. Tip-off is set for 4:15 p.m. AKST.
