SALT LAKE CITY – The Alaska Nanooks fell to No. 21 Colorado Mesa in the final game of the Westminster Classic on Saturday, 102-53. The loss moves them to 0-4, 0-0 GNAC.
How it Happened
The Nanooks fell behind 8-0 before a Marney Rees layup got them on the board at the 8:19 mark. They would let up a pair of threes to fall behind by double digits, but after Tamai Mancuso and Genevieve Velasquez connected on threes, the Nanooks brought it back to an eight-point game. Mancuso and Grace Gillespie added a pair of jumpers from inside the arc, but Colorado Mesa ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 27-12 lead.
Ashlyn Waggoner got the scoring started for the Nanooks in the second with a three, and Gillespie added another two, but the Mavericks scored 19 points without a Nanooks response to take a 49-17 lead. Mancuso ended the run with a three, but seven more unanswered CMU points put them up 56-20 at halftime.
Emily Freeman sank two three-pointers during the third, and Velasquez added another in the quarter, while Mancuso and Desiree Redfox connected from deep in the fourth, but the 'Nooks fell to the Mavericks.
