Norbye Earns Podium Finish in Day Two of PCSC Championships

LA MIRADA, Calif. –
The Alaska Nanooks swim team completed the day two of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference Championships at the Splash! Aquatic Center on Thursday, collecting two individual top-10 finishes and one relay top-10 finish.

In the women's team rankings, Alaska sits in sixth place with 303 points following two days of competition.

"Another rainy and cold day down in Los Angeles, but our swimmers still persisted and swam extraordinarily well given the conditions," associate head coach Becca Weiland said on Thursday. "We got after it tonight and finished tonight's session in a great position. Looking forward to tomorrow."

Redshirt-freshman Kaia Norbye led all Alaska swimmers on Thursday, placing third overall in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.74. Norbye's finish gave the Nanooks 27 points, with her time only 00.21 behind Cal State East Bay's Allie Klinger, who ranked first overall (23.53).

Fellow freshman Whitney McArthur barely missed the top-10 with a time of 24.49, which ranked her 11th overall. McArthur's time in the 50-yard free was a career-best for the Sitka, Alaska native.

Also competing in the 50-yard free, freshman Wanlaya Jarupakorn placed 17th overall with a career-best time of 24.57.

In the 200-yard individual medley, sophomore Oda Bygdnes was the highest-ranking Nanook, placing seventh overall with a time of 2:08.86. Bygdnes' time was 06.13 behind Fresno Pacific's Olga Tovstogan, who placed first overall with a time of 2:02.73.

Fellow sophomore Erika Kakazu also raced in the 200-yard IM, placing 23rd overall with a time of 2:15.49.

The Nooks closed-out day two of the PCSC Championships with the 200-yard freestyle relay, placing fourth overall with a time of 1:37.29. The relay team included Norbye, Bygdnes, McArthur and Jarupakorn.

The Alaska Nanooks swim team will return to the Splash! Aquatic Center again tomorrow (Friday, Feb. 15), to compete in the 100-yard butterfly, the 400-yard IM, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke and the 400-yard medley relay beginning at 8:30am AKST. Finals will take place at 3:35pm AKST.
