EL PASO, Texas – The No. 3-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle remains undefeated through six matches this season, taking down the No. 18th-ranked University of El Paso Miners 4647-4601 at the UTEP Rifle Range on Thursday morning. Alaska improves to 6-0 overall, while UTEP drops to 1-9.
The Nanooks posted a 2297 in smallbore to UTEP's 2285 but ran away from their opponent in air rifle, registering a team score of 2350 to the Miners' 2316.
"A great match to start our first road trip of the season," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Thursday. "JT and Kellan both shot well today and I'm proud that five of the six players we traveled were in the top-10. We're going to try and get some rest before we travel tonight to shoot against TCU tomorrow."
Individually, Alaska had five shooters in the top-10 individually, with three in the top five. In the air rifle standings, Alaska swept 1-5, while boasting three individuals in the top five of the smallbore standings.
Senior
JT Schnering was the highest overall individual shooter on Thursday morning, posting an aggregate score of 1171. The Fairbanks native played first in air rifle with a 592 before ranking second in smallbore with a 579.
Rookie Kellan McAferty was the second overall shooter on Thursday, three points behind Schnering with an aggregate total of 1168. McAferty ranked second in air rifle with a 590 and second in smallbore with a 579.
Redshirt-senior
Robert Scott was the only other Alaska shooter to rank within the top five individual overall with an 1156 aggregate total. Scott tied for third in air rifle with teammates
Amy Gentry and
Grace Nelson, each with a 584. Prior to air rifle, Scott tallied a 572 in smallbore to rank fourth.
UTEP was led by Morgahn Warner, who shot a 580 in smallbore and a 577 in air rifle to total an aggregate score of 1157, ranking her third overall individually.
The Nanooks will travel from El Paso, Texas to Fort Worth, Texas today, getting ready to take on the No. 6 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 16). The first relay is set for 5am AKST, while relay two is scheduled for 9:45am AKST.
