JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – The No. 5-ranked Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team made their first official appearance of 2018 on Monday afternoon, as the Nooks defeated Jacksonville State University 4691-4650 at the Gamecock Rifle Range. The Nooks shot 2327 in smallbore and 2364 in air rifle, while the Gamecocks shot 2308 in smallbore and 2342 in air rifle. The victory improves Alaska's overall record to 5-0 on the season, continuing their undefeated season.
"We had a great first match of the semester today. Everyone was ready to get back in action after the long holiday break and I am very proud of their performances today," head coach
Layne Lewis said on Monday. "JSU hosted a fun match, this was the first time the team has been back to Jacksonville, Alabama since 2012. We are headed to the Citadel tomorrow and hoping to keep this momentum going through our match with the Bulldogs on Wednesday."
Redshirt-senior
Sagen Maddalena was the top overall individual shooter on day, registering an aggregate total of 1183 with a 587 in smallbore and a 596 in air rifle. Monday's results mark the fourth-straight match that Maddalena has been the top overall shooter throughout the 2017-18 season.
Fellow senior
Luke Johnson was the second highest-scoring Nanook on Monday, shooting a 584 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle to record an 1174 aggregate total. Junior
JT Schnering tallied an aggregate score of 1163 by shooting a 582 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle.
Sophomore
Amy Gentry placed fourth amongst her teammates, shooting a 574 in smallbore and a 580 in air rifle to total 1152 against the Gamecocks. Freshman
Spencer Jacobs' smallbore score of 574 counted toward the Nanooks' smallbore total, while redshirt-junior
Robert Scott's air rifle score of 581 career-best.
The Alaska Nanooks coed rifle team will head to Charleston, South Carolina to compete in a match against the Citadel Bulldogs on Wednesday, Jan. 10. The Citadel is the host for the 2018 NCAA Rifle Championships in March.
