The Alaska Nanooks split two GNAC contests last week, falling to in-state rival Alaska Anchorage 89-48 on Tuesday, Jan. 24 at the Alaska Airlines Center before defeating the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets 66-42 at home on Saturday, Jan. 28.
In the Hunt
The following is courtesy of the GNAC Women's Basketball Weekly Notebook
"Alaska has faced one of the toughest schedules of any team in the West Region, but still boasts a winning record of 10-9, following an impressive 66-42 win against Montana State Billings last week. Tied for fifth in the GNAC standings, the Nanooks are looking for their first trip ever to the GNAC Championships behind the leadership of its senior duo of
Kaillee Skjold and
Jordan Wilson. With a strong performance in February, Alaska could be making its case for a spot in the NCAA playoffs for the first time in program history.
One is Never Enough
Senior forward
Kaillee Skjold currently leads the GNAC with eight double-doubles on the season, improving to 16 total throughout her career at Alaska. Additionally, Skjold's 16 career double-doubles is the most of any Nanook women's basketball player in more than a decade. Skjold currently averages 9.4 rebounds per game this season, which is the best in the GNAC.
Movin' On Up
Senior forward
Jordan Wilson broke into the GNAC's top-10 all-time scorer's record book last week, standing with 1,628 career points to rank eighth all-time in the conference. Wilson's 1,628 career points also moves her into the third place seat in Alaska Women's Basketball's all-time leading scorers list.
Wilson continues to be one of the most elite scorers in the country, as she ranks third in scoring in NCAA Division II with a 21.7 point per game average.
Robbery Alert
In last weekend's games against UAA and MSUB, senior guard
Jaylee Mays recorded four steals against the two GNAC teams with the least amount of turnovers per game. Mays has registered a 2.24 steals per game average throughout her career with the Nanooks, ranking her 14th in GNAC history thus far.
Additionally, Mays leads the conference in three-point field goals made with 53 buckets in 19 games, giving her a 2.8 average per game.
Misc. Team Notes
- In the last 17 games, either Skjold or Wilson has recorded the game-high in rebounds or points
- Saturday's win over MSUB was Alaska's largest margin of victory since the season-opener against Academy of Art on Nov. 11
- Nanooks who lead the GNAC:
Scouting the Opponent – Western Oregon (7-12 overall, 3-9 GNAC)
The Wolves were swept by the Western Washington Vikings and the Simon Fraser Clan at home last week. The contest will be the second meeting between the two teams this season, as the Wolves upset the Nanooks 72-67 at home on Jan. 6. Shelby Snook scored 19 points against WWU to continue leading the Wolves with a 15.2 point per game average (fifth in the GNAC). WOU's Jasmine Miller ranks 11th in the conference in field-goal percentage, making 72-of-152 shots from the field this season.
Scouting the Opponent – Concordia (7-13 overall, 4-8 GNAC)
Like their travel partner, Concordia was swept by Simon Fraser (64-55) and the Western Washington Vikings (88-68) at home last week. Concordia leads the conference in blocks with 4.8 average per game, led by Jordyn Peacocke and Bailey Cartwright, who have collected 46 and 20 total throughout the league, respectively.
