Nanooks Tally Nine Goals in Blowout Win over Skyhawks

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks hockey team poured it on in big fashion on Wednesday, March 6 as they grabbed a 9-1 win over the Stonehill Skyhawks. With the win, the Nanooks move to 16-14-3 on the year.

The nine goals scored is the most by the Nanooks since Nov. 27, 1997 when they defeated the Bowling Green Falcons 9-2.

Despite putting up nine goals, it was not the Nanooks who scored first. 10:16 into the opening period, the Skyhawks got on the board with a Dominick Campione goal on the power play, giving Stonehill College the early 1-0 advantage. Seven minutes went by before the 'Nooks found the equalizer. Braden Birnie made it 1-1 with 2:30 remaining in the first, redirecting a Caleb MacDonald shot and finding the back of the net. The 1-1 tie stood through the first intermission. Only 1:06 into the second period, the Nanooks had the lead; one they would not give up. Anton Rubtsov found A.J. Macaulay on a backdoor pass and the blue-liner scored the game-winner early in the second.

Six minutes later, Brady Risk scored his first goal and point of the night. After some give-and-go action with Kyle Gaffney, Risk fired a shot from the goalies right near the slot, making it 3-1 Nanooks. The two-goal advantage stood until the third when the 'Nooks opened the flood gates.

In the third, the Nanooks tallied six goals, including a pair of career-firsts. 6:15 into the final period, Will Hilfiker got his career-first goal from Payton Matsui and Risk. This made it 4-1 Nanooks. Just over two minutes later, Risk made it a pair of goals and three points on the night. Risk's initial shot near the slot was saved by Stonehill netminder Dylan Meilun, but the rebound landed back on Risk's stick and the second time he made Meilun pay, burying the shot and growing the lead to 5-1. Again, just over two minutes later, Jonny Sorenson made it 6-1, putting a rebound away off of a William Lawson-Body shot. A.J. Macaulay scored the 'Nooks second power-play goal of the evening 1:45 later, going five-hole on the Skyhawks netminder for a 7-1 lead.

In the final minute of play, the Nanooks scored their final two goals. First it was Arvils Bergmanis 19:22.4 into the final period of play. 30.6 seconds later, William Lawson-Body tallied his second point of the night and first-career goal. Brady Risk fired a shot over the net that banged off the glass and fell to Lawson-Body, the rookie snapped a quick shot on net and with 7.0 on the clock, closed out the game by making it 9-1 Alaska.

16 Nanooks' skaters recorded a point in the victory; Brady Risk led the way with four points on two assists alongside his two goal. Anton Rubtsov followed with three of his own, all apples, and Matt Koethe, A.J. Macaulay and Payton Matsui all finished with a pair of points.

Lassi Lehti made 12 saves in 48:46 minutes in net and earned the win to move to 4-1-0 on the season. William Hambley saw the final 11:11 in net and made a pair of saves in the third period.

Alaska and Stonehill wrap-up the series tomorrow night. This will be the Nanooks' final game of the regular-season.
