Nanooks Win NCAA Qualifier Match Over UTEP

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks rifle team grabbed a 4728-4516 NCAA Qualifier victory over the UTEP Miners on Saturday, Feb. 17 in the E.F. Horton Rifle Range. 

All of the Nanooks' shooters finished in the top-10, grabbing first through eighth. Sára Karasová grabbed the individual win with an aggregate score of 1186. Following in second was Rachael Charles, firing an aggregate score of 1183. Katrina Demerle impressed with an 1182, taking third. Ellie Spencer was the final Nanook to shoot over 1180, posting an 1180 and taking fourth. Akihito Shimizu fired an 1175, taking fifth, Marina Gonzalez Mazo too sixth with an 1174, Matthew Stout took seventh with a score of 1168 and Tobias Bernhoft-Osa took eighth with an 1165. 

In smallbore, the Nanooks outshot UTEP 2341-2232 to grab the discipline win. Alaska, once again, grabbed first through eighth. Karasová led the way, firing a 590, the only score of 590+ on the day. Charles followed in second with a 586. Demerle shot a 585 and took third, and Spencer and Stout rounded out the top-five with scores of 584 and 583, respectively. Gonzalez Mazo fired a 581, Shimizu scored a 577 and Bernhoft-Osa put up a 574 to round out the Nanooks scores. In air rifle, Shimizu was the high-scorer, finishing with a 598, capping off his 1175. Charles and Demerle followed in second and third, respectively with a pair of 597 scores. Karasová, the aggregate winner on the day, capped her day off with a 596 in air. Spencer also shot a 596, taking fifth. The final three Nanooks all shot over a 585 as Gonzalez Mazo scored a 593, Bernhoft-Osa posted a 591 and Stout shot a 585. 

Alaska won the air rifle discipline 2387-2284.

Following this morning's match, the Nanooks celebrated a pair of seniors. Marina Gonzalez Mazo shot her final match at the E.F. Horton Rifle Range after her years as a Nanook and Akihito Shimizu also shot his final match in Fairbanks after transferring over as a graduate-transfer following his time at West Virginia. 

The Nanooks await the results for the NCAA Rifle Championships on Monday, Feb. 19 - the selection show will be live on the NCAA website at 2:00 p.m. AKST.
