BISCAYNE BAY, Fla. - Alaska swimming's Tori Shoemaker competed in the CSCAA College National Open Water Championship on Sunday morning, participating in the 5k race at Florida International University.
Shoemaker completed the 5k in 1:07:20.70, taking 12th place among all swimmers in the event. She finished 0.81 seconds in front of the 13th-place finisher and 1.22 seconds behind Purdue's Adele Sands. Shoemaker posted the top time among all Division II swimmers in the event, leading DII swimmers by 1:45.90.
"Tori was holding strong and was swimming in the leading pack," said head swimming coach Ksenia Gromova. "At some point, she was leading the pack, but her cap fell off around the last 300 meters, her hair got in the way and a few people passed her. We are very proud of her. Finishing 12th out of 125 swimmers across all college leagues and all divisions is phenomenal. We are beyond proud of Tori."
Shoemaker and the rest of the Nanooks swimming team return to action after the new year, competing in dual meets against Westmont on Jan. 17-18, 2025, at the Patty Center Pool.
