Nanooks Go Toe-to-Toe with Simon Fraser but Fall to Open 2024

FAIRBANKS - The Nanooks women's basketball team fell to Simon Fraser on Thursday, Jan. 4 at home. The loss drops the 'Nooks to 2-11, 0-3 GNAC.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth quarter filled with nothing but offense. Both sides shot over 60% from the field while Simon Fraser also added a 62.5% clip from beyond the arc in the opening 10 minutes. After the first the score was 29-23 SFU. Alaska went 10-16 (62.5%) from the field but could not match the outside shooting by the Red Leafs. In the second, both sides fell back to earth as the Nanooks shot 35.29% and SFU shot 33.33%. Alaska pulled to within five at the halftime break, outscoring SFU 15-14 in the second.

At the break, Anna Nevison was leading Alaska with 11 points, going 3-5 from deep and 4-7 from the floor. She added a blocked shot defensively while Kayla Johnson followed with eight points and four rebounds.

Out of the locker room, SFU used a big third quarter to extend their lead to as much as a dozen. Only three and a half minutes into the third, the Nanooks found themselves down by 12. Emma Wass connected on a jumper to pull them back within 10 but their deficit would hover around 10 and eventually grow to 13 at the end of the quarter on an and-one with 1.2 seconds left on the clock. The Nanooks entered the fourth trailing 67-54.

Another offensive spark would assist the Nanooks in their attempted comeback in the fourth, but they'd ultimately fall short. Alaska shot 58.33% from the floor in the fourth, going 7-12 from the field and adding a 5-6 free-throw shooting performance but the 13-point deficit was too much to overcome as Simon Fraser grabbed an 11-point, 85-74, victory.

Four Nanooks ended in double-digits offensively with Kayla Johnson leading the way. The sophomore posted 17 points on 7-11 shooting. She added four rebounds, four steals, two assists and a block. Emma Wass went 6-8 from the floor, posting 14 points and eight rebounds in the loss. Emma McKenney had 13 points and three assists and Nevison ended with 11 points on the night. The Nanooks return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6. They'll face Western Washington at 3:00 p.m. - catch all of the action on the Alaska Nanooks YouTube page.
