Rifle Opens 2024 with Road Win at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The Nanooks rifle team defeated the Navy Midshipmen the morning of Jan. 20 to improve to 6-2, 3-2 PRC.

Head coach Will Anti felt today's performance was one of learning, "Today was not a great performance overall. I think we certainly learned a lot today, some lessons which we've already learned, but sometimes it takes a few times of learning to sink in. Smallbore in particular was tough. Lots of small mistakes led to easy points slipping away. Air was a better showing overall, I'd even say that they performed a little better than the total air score showed."

Alaska defeated Navy in both disciplines, outshooting them in smallbore 2335-2326 and in air rifle 2377-2369. Individually, Rachael Charles took the win, posting an aggregate score of 1185. The Nanooks had four more athletes in the top-10 as Sára Karasová took fourth with an aggregate of 1178, Elli Spencer took fifth with an aggregate of 1175, Akihito Shimizu took sixth with a score of 1174 and Marina Gonzalez Mazo was the final top-10 finisher taking seventh with a score of 1171.

In the individual smallbore standings, Charles led the way with a high-score of 587. Navy followed in second and third before the next Nanooks shooters in fourth, fifth and sixth. Karasová followed in fourth with a score of 584, Shimizu took fifth with a 583 and Spencer took sixth to round out the squad scorers. Marina Gonzalez Mazo was the final Nanooks athlete in the top-10 for smallbore, as the senior posted a 574. Katrina Demerle took 12th with a 571, Matthew Stout took 13th with a 570 and Tobias Bernhoft-Osa took 16th with a 563.

In air rifle, the Nanooks took the top two spots as Charles finished off her top-placement day with a 598 to lead all athletes in air. Marina Gonzalez Mazo followed right behind with a 597. Navy placed third and the Nanooks rounded out their counting scorers and the top-five with Karasová taking fourth with a 594 and Spencer took fifth with a 594 as well. Matthew Stout and Shimizu were the final top-10 finishers for the Nanooks as Stout took eighth with a 592 and Akihito Shimizu followed in ninth with a 591. Bernhoft-Osa fired a 587 and took 13th and Demerle took 14th with a 586.

Coach Anti shared his final thoughts on the team's performance today, "Marina was a highlight in air; she cleaned the first 40 and shot a PR. Matt also had a solid match. He opened with a 95 and then fought hard to shoot 497/500 the rest of the match. That's a tough road but he fought hard and ended up with a PR. Rachael performed well in both guns. She was displeased with standing, which is understandable, she had a lot of close 9's. Sára was probably the story of the match. She shot well in both guns. All of her equipment is somewhere between Frankfurt and Fairbanks. She's currently shooting with borrowed equipment, an ill-fitting suit cut for a guy, and no cheek piece. She hasn't complained for a moment and has been so resilient. She's a great example of adaptability and composure for her teammates and her coaches. We'll look for a better match effort tomorrow. We're excited for a take two on a good venue."

These two teams battle one more time tomorrow at 5:00 a.m. AKST.
