Nanooks Ski to Third-Place After First Day at Westminster Invitational

MIDWAY, Utah - After one event at the Westminster Invitational, the Nanooks ski team sits in third-place out of 10 teams. They posted 132 points in the 10k classic on Tuesday, Jan. 2 at the Soldier Hollow Nordic Center.

Alaska is back in action on Thursday, Jan. 4 in the freestyle skate.

The women's race kicked off the day at 7:00 a.m. The Nanooks women's team tallied 61 points and were led by Mariel Pulles and Kendall Kramer as the pair cracked the top-10 in their first races of the season. Pulles crossed the finish line in 28:28.4, earning Alaska 23 team points. Kramer followed six seconds behind, finishing in ninth-place with a time of 28:34.5 and earning 22 points for the 'Nooks. Tabitha Williams was the final scorer for the Nanooks team in her debut, cracking the top-20 with a 19th-place finish and time of 29:49.0, earning 16 points and rounding out the 61 points on the day. 

Rosie Fordham followed right behind Williams, taking 20th in 29:59.6. Three Nanooks rounded out the final standings as Elsie Weiss took 29th in her first NCAA race, finishing in 32:20.5. Aila Berrigan took 31st with a finishing time of 32:39.0 and Luise Graef also made her NCAA debut and finished in 32nd, nearly crossing the line at the same time as Berrigan with a time of 32:39.1.

Alaska's 61 points put them fifth in the women's Nordic standings as Utah posted a 98, UAA posted a 76, Montana State scored 74 and Denver edged the 'Nooks for fourth with a score of 68. 

On the men's side, the Nanooks were led by Christopher Kalev. Kalev kicked off his 2023-24 campaign with an appearance on the podium and a third-place finish. He grabbed 34 points for the Nanooks with a finishing time of 24:16.1. Mike Ophoff joined Kalev in the top-10, finishing the 10k classic in eighth-place with a time of 24:36.5 and earning 23 points. Ben Dohlby was the final scoring racer for the Nanooks' men's team. In his first race with the Nanooks, Dohlby just missed out on the top-20, taking 22nd-place with a time of 26:17.1 and grabbing the final 14 points on the day for the men's side. 

Two Nanooks followed Dohlby in the final standings as Josh Baurick took 30th with a time of 27:50.0 and Jace Peters took 34th with a time of 28:40.7.
