MIDWAY, Utah - After one day of the Utah Invitational at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center, the Nanooks ski team sits in second with 148 points. The men's team finished with 49 points while the women's team posted 99, the most by a women's Nordic team in the freestyle.Â
Kendall Kramer was the big winner on day one as the Nanook picked up the first-place finish in the 7.5k freestyle by 15 seconds. She finished the interval start in 21:56.7, outpacing the second place finisher, Sydney Palmer-Leger of Utah, who finished in 22:11.9. The win earned the Nanooks 40 team points and was the first victory of the season for an Alaska skier.
Rosie Fordham followed in third-place, following the second-place finisher by 12 seconds. She finished in 22:23.4 and earned 34 points for the Nanooks, joining Kramer on the podium after the race. The final scoring racer for the Nanooks in the women's race was
Mariel Pulles. She finished seventh, giving the Nanooks an all top-10 scoring finish; she finished the 7.5 freestyle in 22:43.3 for 25 team points.
Tabitha Williams had a strong showing for the Nanooks as the freshman finished just outside the top-10, taking home 11th with a time of 22:59.8.
Aila Berrigan and
Elsie Weiss were the final racers for the Nanooks on day one; Berrigan finished in 27th with a time of 24:20.2 and Weiss took 30th with a time of 24:29.4.Â
The men's side also raced in a 7.5k freestyle. The Nanooks men's team finished day one with 49 points and were led by
Christopher Kalev, finishing the 7.5k freestyle in 16th-place with a time of 19:53.6. His finish earned 18 points for the Nanooks.
Ben Dohlby and
Mike Ophoff rounded out the scoring Nanooks as they finished just behind Kalev in 19th and 20th. Dohlby bested Ophoff by one second, posting a 20:09.5 for 16 points. Ophoff followed in 20th with a 20:10.3 and 15 points for Alaska.Â
Jace Peters,
Josh Baurick and
Aidan Hay were the final racers for the men's team. Peters took 34th and finished with a time of 21:39.0. Baurick was next in line, taking 35th, following Peters by 17 seconds and finishing in 21:56.0. Hay was the final Nanook to finish and took 40th with a time of 22:37.3.Â
Alaska is back in action tomorrow in a 10k classic pursuit. The women's race will start at 7:30 a.m. AKST and the men will follow at 8:45 a.m. AKST.
