Women's Hoops Battles but Falls to Colorado Mesa

LANGLEY, B.C. - The Nanooks women's hoops team fell to 0-3, 0-0 GNAC on the season with a 69-55 loss to Colorado Mesa on Sunday, Nov. 5.

Alaska made a solid comeback effort in the second quarter after falling behind 16-9 in the first quarter. They outsocred CMU 21-16 in the second to pull within two at the break. Unfortunatley a big third quarter for CMU pushed the lead out to 13 as they outscored the Nanooks 25-14. They'd finish the 'Nooks off by 14 with a 69-55 final and 12-11 advantage in the fourth.

Both sides shot 36% from the floor in the opening quarter, but seven made FG's to four played the difference in the scoring. In the second, Alaska outshot Colorado Mesa 47% to 31% and added a pair of threes to make it a close game after 20 minutes. At halftime, Destiny Reimers led the way with 13 points on 6-11 shooting and 1-2 from deep. She had four rebounds at the break as well. Out of the locker room, CMU jumped on the 'Nooks, shooting 55% from the floor with 11 made field goals. The Nanooks shot well in the third, posting a 50% field goal percentage in the quarter, but five more made FG's and three threes to the Nanooks two played the difference.

Alaska unfortunatley played from behind in all of the fourth, not managing to pull within less than 14 the whole period. Mesa grabbed the win to close out the DII Canadian Tip-Off Classic 3-0 while the Nanooks ended the Classic 0-3.

Emma McKenney and Reimers each ended the game with 15 points. Kayla Johnson added 10. Ellen Silva had seven points and led the way with 10 rebounds.

The Nanooks stay on the road and head to Biola for matchups with Biola and Colorado Irvine on Nov. 10-11.
