The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team snagged the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's automatic bid with their GNAC title a day ago. In the championship game, the Nanooks defeated the Central Washington Wildcats by the final score of 72-57. Shadeed Shabazz, the GNAC Tournament MVP, led the way for Alaska, scoring 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds while tallying four steals. Abdullahi Mohamed added 15, Koby Huerta added 10 and Coleman Sparling continued his post presence with eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

With the automatic bid to the NCAA West Regional, the Nanooks are headed to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2005 season. This GNAC Championship is also their third in program history. They were champions in 2003 and 2005. The 2022 title is their first in the tournament-era of the GNAC.

The Nanooks will be hosting a viewing party tonight at 6:15 p.m. at the Patty Center in the Nanook Lounge.
