Nanooks Fall to Seawolves in Double Overtime of GNAC Championship Semifinals

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Nanooks men's basketball team came back from a 14-point deficit in their GNAC Championship semifinal game vs. the No. 2 seed Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Friday, March 6, forcing overtime after both teams ended regulation tied at 67. However, after neither side could claim the victory in the extra five minutes, Alaska's season came to an end in an 87-86 double-overtime loss.

How it Happened
The Nanooks entered the first media timeout ahead 4-3, with Luke Fotheringham and Tariq Weiser chipping in with buckets over the opening four minutes of action. After a pair of Sylas Williams free throws out of the break, Davis Crilly found an open Mike Miller on the wing, who knocked down Alaska's first three of the contest and put them back in front 7-5. Tyriq Luke followed with a swipe and score, poking the ball away and finishing at the other end to give the Nanooks their largest lead of the game up to that point. However, the Seawolves responded with a 15-2 run, flipping the script and putting themselves ahead by nine. UAA would lead by as many as 14, but a pair of threes from Crilly and Luke helped chip away at their advantage. The Nanooks got jumpers from Miller and Luke in the final minute of the half, sending the Nanooks into the locker room down 34-27.

The Nanooks began the second by knocking down their first two shots, with Crilly connecting on a three and Luke following with a jumper to cut the deficit to two. Miller would again make it a two-point game after getting to the rim and banking in a layup, but the Nanooks still could not take the lead, and UAA extended its advantage to nine with 14:49 remaining. However, things began to click for the Nanooks, as a Luke layup kickstarted a 13-0 run for the Blue and Gold. Luke scored 10 of Alaska's points during the run, completing a three-point play in the process, and the Nanooks found themselves up 52-48 with 9:34 to go in regulation. From there, neither team led by more than five, and the game went to overtime tied at 67.

The Nanooks never led during the first overtime period, but Weiser kept the 'Nooks alive as he was able to finish at the rim and tie the game at 80 with 12 seconds left, and the Nanooks held on the defensive end to force double-overtime. Alaska would take the lead with 28 seconds left in the second overtime period when Crilly drove past his man and floated in a shot off the glass, putting the Blue and Gold in front 86-84. However, a Cole Johnson three gave UAA the lead right back, and the Nanooks could not score on the other end.
