Feeling 22
The Nanooks are excited to ring in 2022 for the first time at home this season! They're bringing St. Thomas to town for the first time since the Tommies made the leap to the Division I ranks.
Weekend Plans
This weekend we'll be celebrating two big groups. On night one, the Nanooks hockey program and athletic depart- ment will celebrate the University of Alaska Fairbanks Research Department. Joining the Nanooks at Friday's game are members of the International Arctic Research Center, Institute of Arctic Biology, Geophysical Institute, Animal Resource Center, Center for One Health Research, Alaska Center for Energy and Power, Institute of Northern Engineering, Institutes of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Extension and finally, the Alaska EPSCoR (Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research).
On Saturday night, the Nanooks will host Military Appreciation Night - get to the Carlson early for pregame festivities and a special on-ice presentation for the Nanooks Febru- ary Warriors of the Month!
One for the History Books
This will be the first matchup between the Alaska Nanooks hockey team and the St. Thomas Tommies with both teams in the Division I ranks. The Tommies and Nanooks have faced-off before, but not since Jan. 28, 1989, a home game for the 'Nooks that they won 7-2. At the time, the Nanooks were DI and the Tommies remained DIII. They've played a total of eight times, only twice while Alaska was in Division I.
Last Time Out
The Nanooks are home after a historic road-trip to Arizona State. Alaska picked up their first-ever road-wins over the ASU Sun Devils on Feb. 4-5 at Oceanside Ice Arena in Tem- pe, Az. On night one, the Nanooks three third-period goals to escape a late surge from the Sun Devils. Brady Risktacked on the first goal on a penalty shot, only 4:15 into the opening-period. Harrison Israels scored his first-career goal in the second, tying it back up at 2-2 and entering the third, the Nanooks' Caleb Hite, Anton Rubtsov and Didrik Henbrant scored, pushing the lead to 5-2. ASU scored with 20 seconds remaining to make it a 5-3 Alaska win.
On night two, the Nanooks scored only 50 seconds into the game as Henbrant tallied another. After ASU tied it up, Markuss Komuls took the lead back with under eight minutes remaining. ASU tied it in the second, but just over a minute later, Israels struck again, making it 3-2 'Nooks. Rubtsov added the final Nanooks goal in the third before ASU grabbed another to make it a 4-3 Nanooks win.
Team Leaders
Brady Risk continues to lead the way for the Nanooks as the rookie forward has tallied 21 points this season on nine goals and 12 assists. He leads the way in goals and is tied for the top-spot with Filip Fornaa Svennson in assists. Fornaa Svennson, a sophomore forward, is second on the team in points scored, picking up 18. Alongside his dozen assists, he's scored six goals.
Rookie forward, Anton Rubtsov, has talled three consec- utivce game-winning goals. He scored the opening-goal against Vermont as the 'Nooks won 3-0. He then scored the fourth goal on night one at ASU and the final Nanook goal in game two. All three give him the team-lead in GWG. Gustavs Davis Grigals has stayed hot in net, he's now to
a 2.46 goals-allowed average and .920 save percentage. He's 9-13-1 in net this season.
Meet the Tommies
The Tommies are coming off of weekend matchup with #15-ranked Michigan Tech at home. On night one, the Tommies tied the Huskies 3-3 before falling in a shootout. On night two, St. Thomas fell to MTU 2-0. 17 of St. Thomas' 24 losses have come against teams that currently sit in the top-20 or receiving votes in this week's USCHO poll.
