CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Alaska Nanooks rifle team posted a historic score to defeat the Citadel Bulldogs women's rifle team. They moved to 3-0 on the season with a 4753-4369 victory; this score is a new program-high for Alaska, besting their previous high of 4752 from the PRC Championships last season.
Â
"Today was a really solid first road match." Said head coach
Will Anti, "Of course it's great to set a program record – it's better that we still see a lot of opportunities for points we can pick up."
Â
Peter Fiori led the way in historic fashion as well, posting the season-high aggregate score in the NCAA with an 1195 and tying the smallbore NCAA record with a 597. He added a 598 in air rifle for the top-score on Wednesday, Nov. 2. He was followed by Sára Karasová, who posted an 1188 aggregate.
Rylan Kissell took third with an 1185,
Kellen McAferty took fourth with an 1184,
Gavin Barnick took fifth with an 1181 and
Rachael Charles took sixth with a score of 1164. In smallbore, it was all Fiori. The graduate-transfer tied the NCAA record with a 597 to claim the top spot.Â
Â
"Peter was sensational from beginning to end." Added Anti, "He opened with a clean kneeling in smallbore and hung tough in standing, shooting a 199. It's one of only four 597's ever fired in the NCAA which is remarkable. Possibly more remarkable was his follow-up in air gun – following a good match can be tough. He shot a great match and was very pragmatic and smart throughout. He took a lot of breaks and stuck to his plan and his style. He should be really proud of an 1195 aggregate. That's basically the moon, not many people have been there or even close to the surface of it."Â
Â
Karasová followed in second with a 594. McAferty and Barnick closed out the Nanooks scoring in smallbore with a pair of 589's.
Rylan Kissell followed in fifth with a 588. "Sára had another great day in smallbore. She shot 100 strings in every position which is quite an accomplishment, and she slammed the door shut with a 100 on her last string of the day in standing." Said Anti.Â
Â
Fiori and Kissell led the way for the Nanooks in air; Fiori fired a top-spot score of 598, completing his 1195 and Kissell followed close behind with a 597, finishing off his 1185 aggregate score on day one.
Kellen McAferty took third in the air rifle discipline with a 595 and Karasová rounded out the team scoring in air with a 594. Barnick took fifth in the individual air rifle standings with a 592.Â
Â
Coach Anti was pleased with his team's performance in air and has noticed day-to-day progression all around, "The entire group is improving in air. This match showed some of that improvement. Rylan had a decent day; Kellen was less than pleased with his performance and still managed a solid day. I think that's really telling, our difficult days are getting better. Air is where we've improved the most, but also still the area that provides the most room for growth. We're looking forward to another day at The Citadel tomorrow before heading to Morgantown."

These two teams meet again tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m. AKT before the Nanooks travel to West Virginia for The Fall Classic. Live targets are available with this link.
