SEATTLE, Wash. – The Alaska Nanooks men's basketball team has announced an exhibition against the NCAA Division I, Washington Huskies. Alaska will travel to the Pac-12 opponent next Tuesday, Nov. 1 and play at 6:00 p.m. AKT.
The game will be held at the Alaska Airlines Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. The 10,000-capacity site is home to the UW men's and women's basketball programs, volleyball team and gymnastics team.
"It is a great opportunity for our student-athletes to play against a very good UW basketball team in Seattle, and we're very thankful for the game." Says head coach
Greg Sparling, "The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network, so friends, family, and alumni can watch the game around the country. It will be nice for our team to play in Seattle since we have a large number of our team that played high school basketball in the area. With 12 new guys on our roster, it will definitely help with the growth of this young team."
Washington is coming off of a 2021-22 season that saw them go 17-15, 11-9 Pac-12 and finished seventh in the Pac-12 standings. They defeated Utah on March 9, 2022 in the first-round of the Pac-12 Tournament before their season ended the next day to USC in a 65-61 loss. The Huskies are coached by Mike Hopkins, who first began his tenure with the Dawgs prior to the 2017-18 season. He has led UW to an NCAA Tournament berth, an NIT berth, a Pac-12 regular-season title and coached five first-round picks in the NBA Draft as he enters his sixth season.
As for Alaska, the Nanooks will look to match up with their Division I opponent after making it to the Sweet 16 a year ago in the NCAA Division II West Regional Tournament. The 'Nooks proved all doubters wrong, making their way to a GNAC Tournament Championship, their first conference championship since 2004-05, and made it all the way to the NCAA DII West Region Final/Sweet 16, also their first time since the 2004-05 season.
This matchup is nearly 21 years in the making as it'll be the first time these two teams have played since Nov. 15, 2001 when the Huskies played in Fairbanks, defeating Alaska 82-70. Washington has won all four matchups with the first coming back in the 1970-71 season, an 85-73 UW victory.
