Women's Basketball Set to Play Saint Martin's for Rescheduled Game

FAIRBANKS – The Nanooks women's basketball team will hit the road for their makeup game at Saint Martin's on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2022.

Last Time Out
The Nanooks are coming off of a Saturday loss to Seattle Pacific on their home court. The Falcons defeated the Nanooks 67-45 behind 18 points from Natalie Hoff and 13 from Ashley Alter. The Nanooks were led by Destiny Reimers who scored nine. Claudia Diez Marti added seven. Both sides struggled from deep as the Falcons shot 17.4% from three, shooting 4-23. The Nanooks shot 14.3%, going 3-21. The difference maker was SPU shooting 38.7% from the field to Alaska's 24.3%. They also made nine more free throws and attempted 12 more. 
 
Quick Hitters
  • Destiny Reimers is the current leading-scorer for the Nanooks women's basketball team. She is posting 13.7 points per game through six games. She has scored 82 total points. Alongside her scoring, Reimers is the team-leader in rebounds, averaging 6.3 per game. 30 defensive and eight offensive. 
  • Olivia Kraska is the big offensive board grabber for the 'Nooks. She is averaging 5.3 total per game, second on the Nanooks and leads the team with 13 total offensive rebounds. 
  • Pearle Green is the next leading scorer for the Nanooks averaging 13.3 points per game. The only other Nanook in double-digit scoring. Green leads the Nanooks in made three-pointers with 17, the only Alaska player in double-digits. She is averaging 2.8 per game. Claudia Diez Marti has made five on the season for second. 
  • The Nanooks lone-win of the season came at a neutral site, Anchorage, when they defeated Texas Permian Basin in their season-opener 71-69. This game at Saint Martin's will be their first road-game of the season.
  • Alaska completed their non-conference schedule at 1-4 before jumping into GNAC play. 
  • Paola Perez-Mendoza is one of the best defenders in the GNAC as through six games, the freshman has picked up 20 steals for an average of 3.3 per game. 
  • Ellen Silva has made a name for herself in the post as the R-Fr. from Fairbanks is averaging 1.5 blocks per game. She has blocked nine shots through six games. 
 
Meet the Opponents
Saint Martin's is currently riding a three-game winning-streak into 2022. On Dec. 11,2021 they knocked-off The Evergreen State College 75-56. They then rallied off two wins on back-to-back nights against Pacific on Dec. 16 and Simpson on Dec. 17. Their last scheduled game was postponed due to health and safety concerns. 
 
The Saints currently sit at 8-2, 0-1 GNAC and are the six-seed in the most recent D2SIDA West Regional Women's Basketball Poll. This season the Saints are led by Claire Dingus, who through 10 games, is averaging 18.5 points per game, 7.7 rebounds a game and has 21 steals on the season, all team-highs for SMU. Next for the Saints in scoring is Rian Clear. Clear is averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting a team-high 51.4% from the field.
 
On the defensive end for the Saints, they are led by Dingus and her 21 steals, Clear with 15 and Tierney DeDonatis and Maryn Budiman, who have both checked in with a dozen. Iternite Reed leads the way in the post for the Saints, totaling 11 blocked shots through eight games played. As a team, SMU is averaging 67.4 points per game scoring. They are holding their opponents to under 60 points per game with an average of 59.9 per game. They are the fourth-best scoring defense team in the GNAC.
