FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks swim team fell to the Incarnate Word Cardinals on Friday, Jan. 14. UIW won day one 132-70.
Day one consisted of 11 events. In the first event, UIW took the win in the 400-yard medley relay. The Nanooks top-finisher was a relay team made up of
Nella Pashak,
Whitney McArthur,
Sophia Ruppert and
Emma Corby. They swam to a time of 4:13.56. In the second event
Payton Wojciechowicz and
Caroline McCormick took second and third in the 1650-yard freestyle. Wojciechowicz swam a finals time of 19:16.10 while McCormick raced a finals time of 19:23.00.Â
Emma Corby picked up the Nanooks only win in the 200-yard free posting a time of 1:57.12. Pashak returned to the top-three in the 50-yard free, taking third with a time of 25.68 in the finals.
Naomi Burgan followed up with her own third-place finish in the fifth event, the 200-yard IM, posting a time of 2:19.68. In the 100-yard butterfly,
Sophia Ruppert raced to a second-place finish, posting a 1:01.11, finishing just under a second behind the winner. Corby then took second in the 100-yard free posting a finals time of 55.30.Â
The final four events were the 100-yard backstroke, 500-yard free, 100-yard breaststroke and 400-yard free. In the 100-yard back, Pashak took third with a 1:07.32. In the 500-yard free, Ruppert grabbed another second-place finish with a 5:33.07 and in the 100-yard breaststroke
Whitney McArthur took third with a 1:12.45.Â
The final event of the night was the 400-yard free relay. The Alaska team of Corby, Pashak, W. McArthur and
Lainey Lioi took second with a time of 3:54.80.
These two teams are back in action tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in the Patty Center Pool.
